Please Support the people of Sudan against today’s Military coup

I, Elfatih Ibrahim a proud Sudanese American, am urgently calling on the President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Members of the United States House and Senate to immediately and tangibly support the Sudanese people in their quest for a democratically elected civilian government as an active military coup is occurring.

Tonight, I watch in horror as images of civilian cabinet members being arrested continue to be disseminated across social media. The internet has been disconnected and I cannot get in touch with members of my family and friends in Sudan. The Sudanese people have been completely cut off from the world and it appears as though our civilian Prime Minister Hamdok’s house has been surrounded by military officers and he is under house arrest.

It was only a few hours ago when US Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman met with General Burhan who reportedly told him that he would work with the FFC and Cabinet to keep the transition on track.

This is an extremely explosive situation. Just three days ago millions of Sudanese people marched in the streets reaffirming their support for the Prime Minister and Civilian Rule.

The active military coup taking place in Khartoum right now is led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagallo and General Burhan, two vicious tyrannical authoritarian paramilitary leaders directly responsible for the June 3rd, 2019 massacre that violently ended the peaceful calls for democracy. The Generals have participated and facilitated violent acts throughout Sudan for the past 30 years, both working directly under former Dictator Omar Al Bashier, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

I am calling on you are calling on to immediately condemn the actions of the Generals and to stand with the Sudanese people. I implore you to demand for the military leaders who’ve seized control over the country to step down and step aside.

Sudan remains crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic and in severe economic ruin. My loved ones barely have enough money for food, fuel and many remain unvaccinated as they do not have access to the Covid-19 vaccine.

For the first time in 30 years, children were born in a time when Sudan was not ruled by a military faction. Sudan’s Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdok was working on ushering in a democratically elected civilian government. My loved ones believed in freedom, peace and justice and peacefully fought for it through non-violent demonstrations. I ask for you to not stand by idly as this coup threatens the prospects for the hopes and dreams of generations to be realized.
