Petition to Modify FMLA for Inclusion of Pets
Allow employees the opportunity to use FMLA to care for sick pets.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you propose legislation that would modify the Family and Medical Leave Act for the inclusion of pets. As many pet owners categorize their pets as family, it only seems reasonable that pets be included.
May I remind you that about 62% of all households in the United States have a pet. (Source: APPA) and about 78.2 million dogs and about 86.4 million cats are owned in the United States. (Source: APPA) Pet owners are a substantial representation of the United States and they should not be forced into the uncomfortable decision of choosing between heading into work or staying home to care for an ailing pet.
Please place your full consideration in this matter and propose a much needed modification to the Family and Medical Leave Act for the inclusion of pets.
