Petition to ban assault weapons

Messages Sent So Far
A tragedy of great proportions happened today, Dec 14, 2012, which broke our hearts. 20 children and 6 adults died in a mass shooting in an Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In the recent past there were mass shootings in a mall in Oregon, in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and a theater in Aurora. Easy access to assault weapons makes such mass killings possible.
Assault weapons doesn't belong in our streets and neighborhoods. The 2nd Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, but it doesn't define arms. Were do we draw the line? If we don't draw a line, can a Howitzer be considered a gun that a private citizen can own? We need to pass a law that bans weapons that belong in the military from being owned by private citizens.
This is a petition to pass a law banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

Any debate over the meaning of "...to keep and bear arms.." should have been over a long time ago - let us in the US join the civilized world and exclude these weapons of war from non-military citizen ownership. Petition your legislators to enact a mandatory buy-back of assault-type rifles. Real patriots make sacrifices for the common good.

It's time to make a change. It's time to forget about the 2nd amendement which was written in the past, by people who are now dead, and whose lives are not our American peoples life today! BAN THESE WEAPONS.

To the people in power who hold the ability to make this change on a higher level: Please for a moment, put aside politics and your reputation, and imagine that one of your closest friends or family members fell victim during a scenario such as the recent one in Las Vegas. Please answer truthfully this questions: "Would I still allow for assault rifles to be purchased by everyday Americans?" Even if they pass the tests set in place, even if they don't have a former history of violence and criminal activity...it's becoming clear that lack of these factors does not equate to lack of ability to do something so vile and sick. How many more mass shootings will it take for the government to decide that the ability for Americans to own assault rifles is senseless and leads to horrific acts?? These are lives being lost, not a change in government funding or an increase in taxes or whatever issue you can name...this is bigger than that. We are only given this one life and I, as well as many people I know, want to live with the "normal fears" of being a human, like dying in a car crash or having a heart attack unannounced, not the once unimaginable, now all too realistic fear of being taken out by an assault rifle because someone with the intent to kill has access to such a thing. Please consider changing this law for the sake of our nation and this world. Thank you
