Petition for a switch to dollar coins

Save hundreds of millions by switching to dollar coins.

In 2010 our government spent roughly $1.8 billion making one dollar bills. This number fluctuates yearly, but remains large. The life span of a dollar bill compared to that of our dollar coins is substantially smaller. By gradually phasing out the one dollar bill and replacing it with its coin counter part we could save hundreds of millions of dollars yearly in currency production. This saved money could be reallocated to other underfunded government projects or even providing the lower class with a tax break in the future. It goes without saying that coin production does cost more, but their lifespan will allow for a decrease in need of production which translates into a decrease in spending.
