We, the undersigned, do hereby petition that the following shall be put under mandate.

HELP TO GIVE VETERANS WITH BRAIN INJURY AND THEIR FAMILY A LIFE BACK!

Support the Petition for FREE Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Injury Veterans!

Come and join our movement where we address the intense distress our returning veteran?s experience. Many of these brave men and women have been repeatedly exposed to traumatic events and life-threatening situations on multiple deployments to combat zones and suffer Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). They return home to their families and now have these health issues to deal with.

There are many different treatments for veterans with PTSD and TBI although research shows that many veterans drop out of traditional therapeutic treatments because the process of recounting traumatic events is emotionally taxing. They often fail to continue drug treatments due to the drugs side effects along with the potential for addiction. According to The Mayo Clinic (www.mayoclinic.org) the FDA approved drugs for PTSD, such as anti-anxiety medication, can relieve severe anxiety and related problems for a short time, although because of the potential for abuse, they are not usually taken long term. They also list the FDA approved medications for insomnia and nightmares as well as approved antidepressants as solutions. We feel in some situations drugs can be helpful short term. The goal is to eventually be able to function without drugs and without the need for prolonged psychotherapy, living as close to how our veteran?s felt before their deployment in a natural state of calm and good health.

There is clearly an urgent need to provide alternate methods of helping our returning veterans reclaim their lives and you can now help to provide these veterans and their families with alternative relief based on the study approved Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which is currently a way to heal brain injury patients.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is unique to any other therapy used for brain injuries and neurological conditions: It is the only therapy known that can significantly raise the oxygen content in the brain and cause an adaptation for repair and quicker recovery for TBI patients such as war veterans. Neil young of The Daily News wrote an article about Marine Corps. Lt. Col. (RET) Alan Burghard, a bronze star and Purple Heart recipient, is quoted as contributing his TBI improvement to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. It is stories like this that bring hope to us in making this available to more veterans.

Neurological Injuries are conditions where the brain has developed normally and then has had some type of trauma, whether it is physical such as (TBI) or physiological such as a (stroke). One of the most important applications has got to be immediate HBOT to help recover viable brain tissue that is compromised and minimally functioning with low oxygen content. This therapy has proven effectiveness and should now be considered as a primary treatment option in conjunction with other primary treatments, but insurance providers still don?t cover the costs for this treatment.

How can you help to make Hyperbaric Therapy free for veterans with brain injury?

The FDA has approved already several treatments based on HBOT, but not for all kinds of diseases like cancer, multiple-sclerosis, TBI, etc. Therefore insurance providers still are not forced to pay for the more expensive HBOT treatments. Veterans are suffering in the mean time. Time is of the essence with brain injuries, the longer they are left without treatment the more suffering continues. The hope is that the FDA will at some point in the near future accept HBOT and get it through the approval process. There are many people working towards this goal, although again, many men and women are suffering while the process unfolds.

The White House has now recognized the importance of HBOT brain research as beneficial to the health of the men and women who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. ?The mental health challenges many of our troops face once they return home are very important? Michelle Obama said recently from a podium in Richmond, while launching a new program to help the troops coming home from war by supporting veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

PLEASE HELP TO WIN THE BATTLE FOR BETTER VETERANS HEALTH CARE NOW!

Please sign up on our PETITION PAGE to the U.S. Congress to mandate approval of the use of HBOT to veterans with brain injuries and help these thousands of Wounded War Veterans and their families to get their lives back based on your support. THANK YOU.

ABOUT VTSN: The Veterans Trauma Support Network (VTSN) is a tax-exempt not-for-profit (501c3) Florida based organization. The network was established to generate and accept tax-exempt monetary and equipment donations to provide veterans with brain injuries with free primarily neurological hyperbaric therapy and other alternative forms of trauma therapy. Current top priority projects include HBOT for Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Post-traumatic stress (PTSD) patients. This petition is supervised and administered solely by VTSN.
