Pass H.R. 975: Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2017
Cannabis has been state legal for medical use for over twenty years and the majority of the American people believe that it should be available to those in need. More than half of all states now have a medical cannabis program as part of their law. The time has come for the federal government to recognize state-legal cannabis use.
Congress has already decided that it is inappropriate for a single penny of taxpayer money to be used to go after any state-legal cannabis user or business. The budget rider (Rohrabacher–Farr amendment) was a good first step, but it is now time to take the next step and pass H.R. 975: Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2017.
Cannabis can be used to ease the suffering of many with chronic illness and even cure some illnesses. Conditions that have been shown to respond favorably to cannabis include:
*seizures & epilepsy
*Cancer (symptomatic & curative)
*chronic pain (especially when used as an adjunct therapy)
*addiction (alcohol, heroin, OxyContin, cocaine, methamphetamine, etc)
*spasticity (including that from Multiple Sclerosis)
*nausea & vomiting
*wasting
*HIV
*and hundreds more
Cannabis is not a cure-all and it is not helpful or appropriate for everyone, but the federal government needs to recognize that the decision is not theirs. The decision belongs to the patient, their doctor, and their state government.
