Maternity Leave

Our Babies And Young Mothers Deserve Better

178 countries around the world guarantee paid leave for women to care for their newborns and adoptive children.

Sadly our progressive nation, that fights for democracy and human rights, does not even consider the most vulnerable and valuable of their citizens - the future, our newborns.

Women make up a significant part of the workforce, but are not being treated as the valuable assets they are, when only being guaranteed a job if they return from maternity leave within 12 weeks ... AND compensation is not required by law!!??

Some new mothers do not even qualify for 12 weeks and have no legal protection. Some very unfortunate and very unrepresented citizens have to hand 6 week old babies over ... so they can return to work. This scenario does not fill me with any pride - it's shameful.

America lags so far behind the rest of the world that it is in the same league as African countries in this matter. In fact even South Africa has a better policy than we do - 4 months' paid leave. It is disturbing to grapple with these inadequacies on a global level.

Even sadder and more alarming is the fact that the company pregnant women work for do not have to retain her services once she leaves to give birth if the company has less than 50 employees. This horribly inadequate law probably finds many pregnant women unemployed - just because they became a mother?

Basically what this tells us is that THE LAW DISCRIMINATES AGAINST THE RIGHT TO HAVE A FAMILY?

It's time American leaders got out of the dark ages with regards to this matter and became more pro-active regarding the well-being and welfare of families and supported family life instead of adding to the welfare and divorce statistics.

At the VERY least, our future citizens and residents should be entitled to some support and consideration as they get a well-balanced start to life.

I am certain the States and Federal Government will be expecting nothing less in return in the form of their hard earned tax dollars.
