To the Honorable Members of the United States Congress,
We, the undersigned citizens of the United States, urge you to take action to implement mandatory term limits for Supreme Court judges, similar to the term limits imposed on the President of the United States. This reform is essential to ensure a balanced and accountable judiciary that serves the best interests of our nation.
The Supreme Court plays a pivotal role in interpreting our Constitution and shaping the legal landscape for generations to come. As such, it is imperative that the composition of the Court remains dynamic, responsive to changing societal values, and free from the entrenchment of lifetime appointments.
Mandatory term limits for Supreme Court judges will help achieve the following:
• Promote Accountability: Just like the President, who is elected to serve a limited term, Supreme Court judges should be accountable to the American people through regular appointments or reappointment processes.
• Ensure Fresh Perspectives: Regular appointments will infuse the Court with fresh perspectives and a diversity of experiences, preventing stagnation and ensuring that our highest court continues to reflect the evolving values of our society.
• Reduce Partisanship: Lifetime appointments often lead to political polarization during the confirmation process, as the stakes are perceived as higher. Term limits can mitigate this issue and promote a more balanced, apolitical judiciary.
We believe that by instituting term limits for Supreme Court judges, we can enhance the integrity and effectiveness of this vital institution. We kindly request that you work together in a bipartisan manner to draft and pass legislation that establishes reasonable and fair term limits for Supreme Court judges.
