Make January 19th 2021 a National Holiday
As we all know, the past four years have been some of the most dramatic, stressful, and concerning--to put it nicely--in the entirety of modern history. We all also know that the cause of all of this excitement has been the man that has served as president during this time. Not only has his election itself caused a certain amount of unrest, but he also personally encouraged a huge portion of it. More than any other leader in our country's history, Donald Trump--the man known almost entirely because of his role in dramatic reality television--has been a net-harm on the whole world. His time in office created the largest disparity between parties that has ever existed, and he spent an outrageous amount of time throughout his service stoking the flames of controversy. His term began with the agitation of both parties, ran throughout on a foundation of negativity, and concluded with the incitement of a riot that saw the most harmful insurrection our country has seen since the time of the Civil War. He was impeached not once, but twice--the first time this has ever happened. He was despised by not only the entire democratic party, but also by a fluctuating portion of his own. He took a party that functioned with principles that included respecting law enforcement, individual rights, states' rights, and freedom, and abused it into becoming a party that defined itself through hatred and violence. He segregated the largest portion of the population from each other. He incessantly spouted blatant lies and self-grandiosity. He stoked conspiracy theories, ultimately leading to conspiracy theorists becoming emboldened. He passively supported white supremacists and other racist organizations. He implemented bigoted laws, and non-bigoted laws for bigoted reasons. He spoke ill of literally every single individual who ever publicly disagreed with him on even the most minute issues. He spoke in support of one thing in one minute, and against it the next. He spent time actively attacking people both on an individual-level, and on a group-level. He demeaned and degraded anyone that wasn't a close, vocally supportive, ally. He literally tried to corrupt and influence the actions and behaviors of everyone from his own FBI Director, to his Attorney General, to his Vice President, quickly switching to bashing them personally when they failed to cower at his feet. He spoke secretively with foreign leaders who were known to have placed bounties on our soldiers' heads. He simultaneously spoke with foreign leaders asking for personal favors in order to further his political pursuits. He hired and fired more people than anyone before him. He publicly and loudly questioned the heritage of both his predecessor, and the Vice President that followed him. He spent, quite literally, his entire four years actively seeking ways in which he could verbally assault entire swaths of people, while also enabling law enforcement organizations to physically harm others so that he could take a picture with an upside down Bible--the same Bible that he misquoted more than once. He offered personal affection and favors for those who pleased him, while putting serious effort into trying to professionally ruin anyone who didn't. His legacy, whether looked at in short-term slides, or as a whole term, has been completely and undeniably negative. His legacy is hate and harm. His pride has molded him into someone who cannot even see how his actions could be deemed even slightly inappropriate. Unfortunately, throughout his entire term he had zealots and errand-boys who would fall on their sword for him no matter what line of decency he crossed. These people would fall all over themselves, watering at the mouths, to suck up to him, and were therefore capable of being manipulated into doing quite literally anything he wished for. Because of these people, the original attempt to remove him after his impeachment failed. He now has been impeached a second time, and this time there is a much higher likelihood that it will pass in the Senate as well, now that it has already passed the House. This is, however, too-little too-late as today serves as his final full day in office. It is my personal hope that this pursuit will continue when Congress returns to work after Joe Biden's Inauguration tomorrow, and then there will be multiple legal indictments for Mr Trump that make up the remainder of his life. However, being that he is already 74 years old, even if he was facing legal repercussions for the rest of his life, that would not be sufficient. We, as a nation--regardless of your political affiliation--need to set a reminder here for generations to come. Each of us know, even if we have yet to admit, that having a president similar to Mr Trump is not acceptable, nor is it beneficial in any way. Therefore we must publicly announce as much, and leave for those that follow us a reminder of a level they should avoid sinking to. I believe the impetus of this exact day should therefore be identified from now on as a national holiday--the final day of Donald Trump's term in office.
