Make American Official

The name "American" has never been made the official name of the people of the United States of America

Proposal: for congress to recognize the unqualified use of ?American? as the official national demonym of the United States of America; for all legal documents (i.e. passports, identification cards, citizenship certificates, international accords, etc.) to replace the term ?U.S. citizen? with ?American citizen.?

The name ?American,? which we hold so dear, has never been made the official national demonym of the United States. You may not be aware that our government refuses to use the name ?American? to refer to the citizens of our country or things pertaining to the USA on legal documents such as passports, identification cards, naturalized citizenship certificates or international treaties. Although the government of the United States previously used ?American? on these documents and others, it no longer does so due to one main reason: It is afraid of upsetting countries that object to our use of the name.

Foreign language speakers can make the rules for their languages as they please, but we English speakers should make the rules for our own language. As a result of this controversy, our government has quietly acquiesced to the complaints of non-citizens and, therefore, always uses ?United States? to refer to things pertaining to the country (e.g. U.S. citizens) in all legal documents and treaties.

I believe that the government is dishonoring the name which belongs to all true patriots of this country, be they native born or naturalized, regardless of race, ethnicity, or creed. Indeed, naturalized immigrants who came here legally and adopted our country as their own should be accorded the official title of American citizen, and not merely a ?U.S. citizen.? I implore you, as true patriots of our country America to make ?American? the official name of the people of this great nation.
