LESS HOMEWORK!!!

Too much homework can lead to stress, obesity, and even depression. Teachers should only be allowed to enforce 10 minutes of homework per grade level. ( 10 minutes for 1st grade, 20 minutes for 2nd grade and so on)

Too Much Homework

Schools throughout the U.S. are giving too much homework, and it has been negatively affecting students, causing stress which may lead to depression and obesity. According to the article ?Does homework help students??, ?Large amounts of homework stifle motivation, diminish a child?s love of learning, turn reading into a chore, negatively affect the quality of family time, diminish creativity, and turn learning into a drudgery.? Also, according to Harris Cooper, a psychology professor at Duke University, after doing homework for more than two hours, the effect reverses and it no longer is beneficial because one is putting in more effort than they are getting out of it.(?By the Numbers: Homework?) Too much homework can also cause sleep deprivation because many students stay up late to finish it, and if they do not get enough sleep (sleep deprivation) it can inhibit growth factors. (?Is too much homework bad for kids? health??) This is because growth hormones are released only when sleeping, and if one does not get sleep, sufficient growth hormones are not released; therefore, the body and mind grow less. (?Can Lack of Sleep Stunt Your Growth??) This proves that having too much homework is in fact an issue as it robs students of their free-time, causes sleep deprivation which slows their growth and also causes stress which can lead to depression and obesity. Sleep deprivation not only inhibits growth factors, but it also decreases a students academic performance the following day. Many students are not even able to eat dinner with their families, which is said to be a large predictor of how well a student performs academically.

The debate about whether to have or not to have homework has been going on for a long time, and it is still going on today. Homework has been a long-standing problem that began in the late 19th century. There were even 1900 anti-homework editorials, and ? In 1901, California lawmakers abolished homework in elementary and middle schools.? (?Homework?) Between 1940 and 1980, the opinion on homework was constantly changing due to the U.S. wanting to stay competitive academically with the rest of the world.(?Membership.?). This evidence proves this issue has been a long-standing problem, because there have even been anti-homework editorials from over a century ago. In 1901, California took action on the issue, showing that it was a big deal at the time, and that it needed to be acted upon. This shows that this topic has been up for debate for a long time and that even then, there were activists standing up for what they think is right. Don't overburden students with too much homework!
