Kurds have the Right to Self-Determination and a Country of their own

We are writing to respectfully request the acknowledgment and acceptance of an independent Kurdistan in what is now the region administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government in Northern Iraq.

Since the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) by the Kurdistan National Assembly in 1992, Kurds have steadily advanced as an autonomous entity within Iraq. In addition to unprecedented economic development, The KRG has managed to secure its territory, despite increasing threats from hostile and extremist forces, the KRG has taken

steps to secure its citizens, territory and resources, while also providing sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of refugees from the ongoing conflict, including Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities. However, due to mounting calls from their constituency and also citing the increased instability and lack of security in Iraq, the KRG has announced plans to move forward with a referendum on a declaration of independence in the coming months. An unofficial referendum was conducted in 2005, yielding results in favor by over 98% and it is widely anticipated that similar results will be achieved with this new poll.

Kurds in the United States, Europe, Israel and elsewhere have been watching intently as events unfold in Iraq and have become increasingly vocal in their support for peace in the region, as well as the formation of a Kurdish state. The coming weeks and months are believed to be critical to the Kurds' aspirations as well as the future of the Iraqi state, but one thing is for certain- millions of Kurds around the world are hopeful that the end result will be the creation of an independent Kurdistan. As Kurdish Americans, friends of Kurds, and Americans we support the rights of Kurds and people in Kurdistan to self-determination and a country of their own called Kurdistan.
