Justice for Vieques: Increase the currently assigned funds for Vieques\' clean-up
Even after a decade of the U.S. Navy departure, only 5% of contaminants left behind by military practices have been removed.
The following petition demands the increase of currently assigned funds for Vieques' clean-up.
These funds will help achieve a faster decontamination of the former Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility, which was present and active in Vieques until 2003. Even after a decade of the U.S. Navy departure only 5% of the munitions left behind by the bombing and military activity have been removed. The health quality of the people of Vieques has been immeasurably affected. There is a 30% higher rate of cancer for Viequenses than for those living on the main island of Puerto Rico.
