Increase Wages in SC

With the population boom occurring in the tri-county area in South Carolina the housing market has spiked quite a bit. Affordable housing has become a great concern for especially for Charlestonians. There is a great disparity between the increase in housing and the stagnation in wages in South Carolina.

The wages in South Carolina for the major manufacturing and aerospace companies in the tri-county area does a great disservice to the residents of this state. For most manufacturing companies the pay may only be as high as $18 per hour which equates to $37,440 annually. South Carolina is ranked number 7 in the states with the lowest average incomes. The average income for South Carolina is $47,458. As you can see the wages are below the National average for South Carolina. There are many companies that have moved here to South Carolina so the jobs are plenty but the wages are long overdue for an increase. The so called good jobs are only pay a few dollars more than working at fast food restaurants. To maintain the population and to make the playing field more level there needs to be action on behalf of the constituents of South Carolina.

The housing market in Charleston has increased exponentially due to all the new construction and transplants from other states. The average rent in Charleston is $1,441 for a one-bedroom with an annual salary of $57,640 or higher. For a two-bedroom is $1,684 your annual salary should be around $67,360 or higher. If you wanted to be a homeowner the average home in South Carolina is $225,406. The monthly payment for this home would be approximately $1149 based on a 660-679 credit score. So if you’re only making $37,440 you are faced with the daunting task of being able to afford suitable housing. The actual wages for a single adult does not afford a native Charlestonian the ability to buy a home.

In summation it is time and well overdue for the wages in South Carolina to be increased. With the population increase alone in the Charleston area the residents that were born here need the opportunity to have stable housing and earn more wages. The companies that are here can afford to pay the residents more. Let’s not contribute to the residents being taken advantage of. I implore you to look into increasing the wages for your constituents.
