Fight for Our Flag

Under no circumstance should the American flag be spit on, stepped on, or otherwise desecrated. Wars are fought for flags, and people die for them. To spit on the American flag, is to spit on the graves of all the soldiers that have fought and died

We petition the Congress to recognize that the desecration of the American flag is not, in fact, a protected act of symbolic protest under the first amendment. The founding fathers, specifically Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, supported laws prohibiting flag desecration, and recognized these laws legitimately in compliance with the First Amendment of The Constitution. Furthermore I insist that it is the will of the citizenry of this nation, as well as the will of those States in which they reside, that Congress protect this nation?s flag from being desecrated, defaced, or mutilated. Also the flag should not be burned, except in ceremonial retirement from service.

The Armies of America fight, and soldiers die and come home wrapped in her flag. The Congress must stand up for this nations flag, as the soldiers that have fought and died for it have, else their sacrifice may very well have been in vain.

Americans want to see their flag protected, and this nation possesses an inherent interest in protecting its flag from acts of desecration. The Congress needs to acknowledge this interest, and pass legislation protecting our flag. By 1932 every state in this Union had passed laws prohibiting flag desecration. Today 48 states have such statures, but because of Supreme Court ruling Texas v. Johnson (491 U.S. 397) these statures are not recognized as constitutional. The Congress and the States have both the power and responsibility, to prevent the physical desecration of the American flag.

We petition the Congress to recognize its responsibility, and the States and federal government?s power, to protect our nations flag.

Please consider a constitutional amendment?"the Congress and the States have the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."
