End the Prohibition of Marijuana

For far too long American citizens have been subjugated to the, frankly, idiotic laws that govern the use of Marijuana within our country. President Nixon passed the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 which put Marijuana and many other "illicit' substances on a federal ban list. Marijuana was put in the most restrictive category, Schedule 1. This meant that in the eyes of the law, Marijuana was as dangerous well known "hard" drugs such as Heroin, MDMA, Mescaline, LSD, and many more. In the Acts infancy, Marijuana's classification as a Schedule 1 drug was only meant to be a place holder until further study could be done to adequately assess if it should even be on the list. In 1972 Governor Raymond Schafer, the Chairman of the Schafer Committee, delivered the finding of his committee in a report titled "Marijuana, A Signal of Misunderstanding", and called for the end of Marijuana Prohibition.

In 1994 former Nixon assistant and Watergate Conspirator, John Ehrlichman, told the shocking and disgusting truth behind the CSA: "The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did." Those are the words of a man that worked alongside the President that wrote in this idiotic act. I would go as far to say that the CSA, and the War on Drugs have been the biggest failure our country has ever seen. Not only is drug use, and drug overdoses at an all time high, the amount of people that suffer from the criminal charges is unfathomable. People that have committed "crimes" with no victims have been sent to jails, and prisons. Sometimes for life.

Why does the federal government continue to impose an act that has done far more damage to innocent people that have not harmed a soul. The CSA wasn't made to fight criminals. It was made to criminalize those that spoke out against an unpopular President. Thousands of people have been torn apart from family because of this. Fathers have been sent to Prison. Sons and Daughters have been barred from having good jobs. For what? Smoking a joint? It's almost laughable when I see that written. But it's the truth. Our Great Country has much more to worry about than Marijuana. I understand that. But to some people, it's everything.

The people of America have been making waves across the country, and we've spoken. We don't want the Government telling us we can't responsibly use Marijuana.

God Bless the United States of America. Home of the Free. Land of the Brave.
