End the Privatization of Prisons

Private prisons profit off of inmates; this needs to be stopped.

Today, approximately 20% of the U.S. federal inmate population is incarcerated in private prisons. These prisons, which are owned by large corporations like the Corrections Corporation of America and The GEO Group, Inc., profit off of the number of prisoners held in their facilities. Making a profit off of imprisoned people is morally and ethically wrong, and it poses a threat to the legitimacy of this country?s justice system. In order to uphold the rights of all people, to rehabilitate those in need, and to better our society, the privatization of prisons and the profiting off of individual lives must come to an end.

We ask Congress to reform sentencing legislation, like mandatory minimum sentencing laws and "truth in sentencing" laws, in order to support successful reentry and to lower the mass prison population, by supporting the passing of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act into law. We also ask that the Federal Bureau of Prisons discontinue the transfer of inmates to private prisons. The private prison business is a morally faulted and ethically fragmented establishment that needs to be stopped; we ask that Congress put an end to this business that profits off of the lives of American people.
