I write as a supporter of Iraqi Kurdistan and resident of your Congressional District to urge you to join in supporting the upcoming Iraqi Kurdistan’s September 25th referendum.
Iraqi Kurdistan has been an oasis of stability and democracy in an otherwise volatile and chaotic region. The people of Iraqi Kurdistan have proven themselves among the most dependable allies of the United States and most pro-American people in the world. The Kurdistan’s Peshmerga Forces courageously supported U.S. forces in the Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, and continue to be our stalwart and capable partners in destroying ISIS in Iraq today.
The Iraqi Kurds share our values; Iraqi Kurdistan believes in a secular form of democratic governance, making it a bulwark against extremism. It has a vibrant civil society, an independent media, and embraces tolerance and diversity. It serves as a sanctuary to Christian, Yazidi, Turkmen, Shabak, Fayli, and Kakayee communities because their rights are recognized and protected under the laws of Iraqi Kurdistan and in its draft constitution. Since 2014, Iraqi Kurdistan has opened its doors to over 1.8 million internally displaced persons and refugees, including Christians and other minorities who have been viciously driven from their homes by ISIS terrorism.
Iraqi Kurdistan’s referendum will occur in September, to give voice to its people who deserve to decide their own destiny – the same right enjoyed by people in this great country and in other democracies. While there may be opposition, we believe the U.S. has ample reason to stand with the Iraqi Kurds in their quest for self-determination, and constructively engage to help facilitate peaceful implementation of the process. Let’s prevent further instability in an already turbulent region.
Since 1991, some 27 nations have exercised self-determination and come into being. An independent Kurdistan will continue to be a loyal, dependable U.S. ally and beacon for democracy in the Middle East. I speak for myself and many others in my community in asking you to support Kurdistan’s referendum and to ensure that the U.S. takes constructive actions are necessary and conducive to the peaceful implementation of the September referendum.
