Allow Medicare to Negotiate Prescription Drug Prices
Medicare is not allowed to negotiate drug prices.
People on Medicare are not allowed to use drug manufacturer’s discount drug cards or coupons.
If you are on Medicare you are not eligible for patient assistance programs from the drug companies. Because of these regulations, disabled persons and seniors on social security pay more for prescription drugs than able and working people.
Medicare recipients pay hundreds of dollars more for monthly medications than other citizens.
No senior should have to pay 25% or 50% of their monthly income on necessary medications or sacrifice paying utilities or buying groceries so they can get their insulin.
Congress needs to change these laws and allow senior and disabled citizens to benefit from negotiations, assistance plans and discounts.
We should not be forced by congress to pay more for drugs after retirement than we paid before retirement.
For example, One generic drug for cancer patients who have suffered loss of saliva glands due to cancer treatment cost $15 per month before retirement and changed to $95 per month after starting Medicare. These additional costs are even higher for medications that are still under patent. Some drugs still under patent are not included in the Medicare formulary even though there is not another drug yet that has the same benefits.
In some instances the Medicare price is higher than the cash price.
This is a travesty and a tragedy for food insecure seniors.
Currently, more than 18% of the total American population is on Medicare and that number is expected to increase to 25% by 2030. As part of that 18% we want congress to pass laws to allow drug prices to be negotiated on our behalf.
Congress is sacrificing the American people for drug company profits and campaign donations.
We need 100,000 signatures to send this to Congress, the Senate and the White House
but we need a million signatures or more to get them to listen!
