Adequate maternity/paternity leave
Our country is one of few that makes zero allowances for new parents to be with their children.
Many mothers of new born children are forced to return immediately to work after child birth. In many cases the best scenario is that that they return after six or eight weeks. Their children are still breast feeding. Many of these mothers and their families are put under enormous financial stress to take that minimal amount of time off. This lack of financial income often leads to parents working all hours and leaving children at home with minimal exposure to rich language environments and opportunities to learn. Low socio economic status has a direct correlation to speech/language impairments and cognitive ability. This is addressed and paid for heavily through our public schools. It comes full circle.
This issue is also detouring many highly educated and responsible, capable people from having children at all.
Fostering our children's safety, developement, and security is what ensures stable adults to run this country in the future. Why are we not investing more in to allowing children to be raised in stable environments?
