CONCERNING THE PROPOSED EXPANDED DHS SURVEILLANCE POWERS
We the undersigned do make known our following concerns and demands for a dictatorship- free United State of America:
That the current debate and upcoming vote on expanding new and dangerous surveillance powers for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at this time, should be suspended and stopped immediately, due to the undeniable and unquestioned constitutional threats posed by the current Trump administration that will not hesitate (one moment) to use such expanded DHS powers to further remove and dismantle the constitutional rights of U S citizens under the First Amendment. The timing couldn’t be worse and is certain to give only more power to an alarmingly more lawless, desperate and unpopular Administration—something the country can ill afford in this very grave dark hour. We should never allow this fire to grow, by offering more wood.
The very nature of these new tools and proposed laws are disturbing enough. One reported proposal was to allow DHS to “indiscriminately dragnet the Internet without warrants (effectively bypassing the FISA Courts),” in search of US citizens to profile for possible criminal offenses, in clear violation of the Fourth Amendment on warrantless search and seizure without due process of the law. The NSA during the Obama administration was accused of the selfsame activities, until a massive public outcry caused the unlawful practice to change. Another report (also more reminiscence of Totalitarian regimes) paints a grim picture of flagged US citizens being forcibly removed from their homes after being visited by armed secret federal police that arrest and place them in custody at some unknown federal detainment facility (possibly without bond). Sanity and history demands that these proposed Draconian practices are discarded from any consideration entirely— or we will join in making the same deadly historical Fascist mistakes. In 1933 Germany it started with brown shirts…
