Abolish the Aisle - Make Congress Mix

It is time for the tradition of "the aisle" that physically separates republicans and democrats in both houses of congress to be abolished.

The aisle is a physical boundary in congress that promotes division and partisanship. Republicans sit on the right, Democrats sit on the left and there is a wide aisle dividing them. It was designed to put unity with a political party above the issues and the concerns of the American public. The aisle is designed to make it extremely uncomfortable for a member of one party to "reach across the aisle" and agree with members of the other party.

We must remind congress that their responsibility is to the people within their districts and to the United States of America as a whole.

By signing this petition, you will send a powerful statement to our elected officials in Washington DC, that they have been put into power to work together for the greater good of our Nation and that they are expected to work together.

Most people would say that the Berlin Wall had nothing to do with the central issues of the Cold War. But, when Regan called on Gorbachov to "tear down this wall", they turned the destruction of a physical barrier into a symbolic gesture and turned clenched fists into handshakes. The aisle in Congress is our Berlin Wall. We can do this.

It is time for this antiquated tradition that subtly yet powerfully divides our government with the Republicans on the Right and Democrats on the Left, to end.

If we can start by agreeing on this simple principal, then we can move on to discuss what new system should be implemented.

This petition proposes that twice per year, seating assignments in both houses in congress should be shuffled, with members receiving a random seating assignment.

This will give every member of congress a new opportunity to meet the representatives of other districts and to better understand how proposed policies will affect America as a whole. This small change will inevitably lead to a more respectful exchange of ideas and increase bi-partisan support for issues that matter to American citizens.

Getting something done starts with getting along.

If you agree, and would like to see this simple idea be implemented in congress, we need your help. Share this petition on social media and use the hashtag: #MakeCongressMix
