A constitutional amendment to end all shutdown and default threats

This will unequivocally force members of Congress to reach a deal every year

Dear honorable members of Congress,

I am deeply concerned about the effects of the present and all future government shutdowns and threats as well as the more harrowing threat of broaching the US borrowing limit. If Congressmen and women were serious about cutting a deal - i.e.- doing their jobs - they would be willing to put their own electability on the line. My proposed amendment would ban all sitting members of Congress from running for re-election in the event of a government shutdown or debt ceiling breach on their watch.

Even though this may appear to threaten your jobs, I believe the opposite is true. Supporting this amendment in light of the current crisis in Congress would make you stand out to a public that, I can virtually assure would back your decision. Secondly, this amendment would disincentivize the threat of piercing the borrowing limit or unfunding government for political posturing. Finally, this will infuse a great degree of confidence among the wary and clearly miffed public in the functionality of the federal legislature. Such a position will undoubtedly suffuse optimism throughout the markets and broader economy.

For these reasons, I implore each and every member of Congress to state his or her public support for such an amendment. I hope that such statements will supply the seeds for true Constitutional reform.

Sincerely,

Faraz Sultan
