30 Year Ban on Donating Blood

For the last 30yrs. gay men have been banned from donating blood; a clear case of discrimination!

How can it be that in the year 2014, we, as a country, are still looking at the transmission of HIV the same way we used to in the 1980's? The fear and lack of knowledge may justify why the ban was put into place, but it is completely incomprehensible why this ban is still in effect. This ban is based on the erroneous assumption that all gay men engage in promiscuous, unprotected sex. I believe, with the exception of the uneducated and radically prejudiced, we all know that this blanket generalization is absurd. And the notion that only homosexuals can transmit blood-born diseases is obviously the opinion of someone who has little to no medical knowledge whatsoever.

As the world's only super-power, it is unacceptable for us to cling to such and antiquated and prejudiced way of thinking. How can we claim to be a world leader when we can't even recognize a complete lack of common sense in our own laws? We see ads on TV encouraging blood donation and then ban people from doing so. This ban needs to be lifted immediately. We will not take 'No' for an answer.
