Let's Pass The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act To End Trigger Leads

I am writing to you today to ask that you co-sponsor The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act

Trigger leads are sales leads generated when a consumer completes a mortgage application where their credit report is pulled. Consequently, consumers find themselves bombarded with a torrent of unwanted calls, texts, and emails, often despite registering on the Federal Do Not Call List or opting out of such services. This is a violation of anyone’s most basic data privacy expectations. In co-sponsoring this bill, you would be standing not only with consumers but also reinforcing the data privacy rights of your constituents.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows credit agencies to sell data from credit report inquiries that consumers incorrectly assume to be protected confidential data, provided the entity purchasing this data is prepared to make a “firm credit offer.” Regrettably, this vague language has become an exploited loophole. The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act remedies this problem.

I strongly urge you to lend your support to this essential legislation. Please consider co-sponsoring the Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act for the benefit of your constituents, our industry, and consumer privacy rights. Thank you for your time, consideration, and service to our district.
