Ask your Senator to Remove KDP & PUK from Tier III Designation

Remove the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan from treatment as terrorist organizations and for other purposes under the Patriot Act.

I am writing to respectfully bring your attention to an issue of the designation of the two Kurdish political parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as a Tier III groups and seeking your support on Senate Bill No. S.2255 - a bill to remove the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan from treatment as terrorist organizations and for other purposes under the Patriot Act.

As your constituent, we have been working diligently for the last several years to remove this mischaracterized designation and are close to achieving statutory relief. This designation does not represent the rich and historic relationship that has existed for years between Kurdistan Region and the United States of America, and does not reflect the true nature of our political and economic cooperation.

We have been working closely with Senators McCain and Chairman Menendez among others who have just introduced Senate Bill No. S.2255. Senators Menendez, McCain and other friends of Kurdish-Americans are working hard to build support for this bill, and we expect this legislation to be considered by the Senate very soon. Statutory relief of this sort was provided in 2008 to the African National Congress (ANC), and we are hopeful that this year the same relief will be rough tot the Kurdish political parties.

Your friendship and partnership to the Kurdish-Americans on many key issues over the years is greatly appreciated and we would strongly welcome your public support on S.2255. Thank you!
