Oppose the Elimination of NSF Funding for Political Science Research in HR 933
Insure that we have quality research on political science and public policy.
I am writing to implore you to block Senator Coburn?s amendment to H.R. 933 that would eliminate the National Science Foundation's program for political science research. As your constituent, I find this proposal without cause and against the spirit of the NSF.
The mission of the NSF is ?to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense.? These are concerns shared by the citizens of the United States and its elected leaders, and they are directly addressed by NSF-funded political science research. How can government become more efficient? What causes terrorism? How does technology influence democratization in the developing world? When do sanctions work? This research provides profoundly valuable insights about our current world.
In the end, rigorous, evidence-based research on political science is important because politics can dramatically change the lives of citizens - because the work of politicians is important. I appreciate the previous support from Congress for NSF-funded political science research and I strongly encourage you to continue that support.
