Five years availability from the date of the first claim filed and granted seems to make more sense. I am sure our contributions are deposited in an interest bearing account. There are also many contributors who will never claim or be able to claim their benefits. Education and retraining are less costly than subsidy.Jan 5th, 2015Someone from Syracuse, UT signed.

I think its terrible after serving our country that there's a time limit on using the GI loan. I want to purchase a home and the fact that our government puts a limit on our (veterans) benefits is disgraceful.REPORT COMMENTS

This bill should have no EXPIRATION DATE are military personnel risk there lives every day to keep us free and its sad how our government does everything it can to not return the favor. Every life they save is priceless we are forever in their debt. It's time we start acting like it!!!REPORT COMMENTS

GI Bill Education Benefits should never expire. Our soldiers earn their benefits even if it takes them 30 or 40 years to claim them!REPORT COMMENTS

I recently found this out the hard way myself. I was recently laid off and went back to school to get retrained. Due to me working 60-80 hour weeks for 7 years, I never had time to go back to school. When I did this summer I found that my benefits expired five years previous and I was out of luck. Now trying to find way to pay for school makes it difficult.REPORT COMMENTS

After being involuntarily separated due to cut backs after the gulf war I struggled to make ends meet and couldn't peruse college. By the time I could think of going to school my 10 year deadline was up. They should at least refund the $1200 paid.REPORT COMMENTS

Like many, I want to use my benefits long after I have left service (10+ years). My kids are older now and I finally have some evenings to pursue higher education. I believe many are on the same boat.REPORT COMMENTS

I did not have an opportunity to use my GI Bill, yet spent my hard earned money and time in Desert Storm to earn it. I guess the government isn't satisfied with my time and life, it needs to take my money too.REPORT COMMENTS

It makes no sense to limit the time we have to use the benefits. Some of us need time to get "life" together before becoming serious about getting a degree. Whether it's ten years or one hundred, the entitlement is STILL ours.REPORT COMMENTS
