I served faithfully in the US Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged. I then went to culinary school and used part of my GI bill for my Associates In Science Degree. Now 12 years later after working hard and making it where I'm at in my career I feel I might want to own my own business some day. I would of loved to use my GI Bill if it was still valid, however because the rule "after 10 years it expires" I no longer have that option. It is a disappointing that now that I would love to earn a bachelors degree in business and use my GI Bill I can not do this, and if I do it the expenditures would have to come out of my pocket. I just hope some one in congress could help the Veterens of the United States of America do something about this sad issue that definitely needs to be addressed, and rectified.Oct 8th, 2015Someone from Palmdale, CA signed.

My story is very similar to many of the others who have lost their GI Bill benefit due to it expiring after ten years. After I separated active duty (94-98) I was working full time and raising a family. Unfortunately there was no time for me to attend any schooling and take advantage of my benefits. I believe that there should be no expiration of benefits regarding the GI Bill. Also the benefit should be able to be transferred to a spouse or child, especially in the case of illness or death. I believe that is a fair condition for the act of service that is provided to this nation and government.REPORT COMMENTS

I began working immediately after my discharge. I have been so busy making a living and supporting my family I never had time to go to school. Now I need education to further my career 16 years later and my benefits are expired.REPORT COMMENTS

I spent 16yrs. serving my country. I left w/ an honorable discharge. Had some delays in life due to some family tragedies. Started back to school in 2009. Va. advised benefits expired! I've completed my degree and graduated w/ honors!!! I believe that VA should pay for it! Not one time I begged or gotten upset. I just focused and obtained my degree. Now, I believe that should flip the bill for it.REPORT COMMENTS

UN-USED VETERAN?S GI -BILL EDUCATION BENEFITS SHOULD NOT EXPIRE! It's simple, like all others have said our benifits sould not expire after 10 years. We served our country, protected our country in many ways. We should be allowed to use them when we see fit to not, restricted to a gov time frame. Give us back our GI BILL!!!! I'm sure the gov can do it they just refuse to, that would take $$ from their pockets, they might not get that $300,000 + pay check that they really need. Just do it, give it back.REPORT COMMENTS

There should not be an expiration date on the usage of the money paid into the Montgomery GI Bill by any service member. I also feel if they can't use these benefits they should be transferable to a child. We don't qualify for any financial aid for our children and never used this benefit but it would be very helpful now and would also keep our child from incurring a huge student debt. Once again I feel our government helps people but not the ones who served this nation or paid into this fund. They make money from us which is completely wrong.REPORT COMMENTS

I retired after 30 years. I began a mini-career, teaching JROTC at a Connecticut high school. I left that after 10 years to move south to warmer weather. I retired in May 1998. When I tried to return to college to complete a BA/BS, I was informed that because I entered service before the Montgomery GI Bill and retired pre-9/11, I was ineligible and besides that, it was beyond the 10 years I had to used my GI Bill for education. I do not believe that my benefits should have an expiration date! The credits I have, which colleges and universities will allow me from prior college courses and my military schools and experience make me a junior. I cannot afford two years of college tuition, books and fees. I could, I suppose, but it would mean digging into my IRA and other investments made for when I must truly retire.REPORT COMMENTS

I have to agree that it is simply unfair to have a "lost it" time stamp. I was fortunate to find a job after leaving the Air Force and always felt I couldn't attend classes because of a very flexed schedule. Now I am many years past my 10 after and I can't use my benefits. I can look back and say I should have tried back then but who knows their circumstances in the future. I could use this to better by standing and opportunities. What happens to all the money that doesn't get used, anyway? Does it go to help anyone or is it turned over to administration and used to line their pockets?REPORT COMMENTS

I've run into so many problems trying to use my GI Bill Benefits, twice before expiration, and once after. Part of my motivation for joining the service was the knowledge that I would get assistance with education, after serving my country. It's really heartbreaking to have administrative incompetence be one barrier, and then a hardline date in the system be the other. This benefit, like VA home loans, should be a lifetime benefit for all who serve.REPORT COMMENTS

I attended college from University of phoenix and received my associates degree in business management. My counselor said since I waited over 10 years I was ineligible for the college benefit of $10,800 I was promised when I signed up and I get no refund of MY money? Now I owe over $20,000 and they are more than happy to rip me for a high interest rate. THIS IS CROOKED!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

After being deployed to Iraq on to separate tours. 2003/2004 Life was kinda complicated after the military. It took me a little longer to adjust and get stable than most. 10 years seems like a long time time but really isn't. After the military I was dependent on alcohol n drugs all while trying to go to school/work raise a family. By the time i bounced back from being in war on terror and then the war on addiction my gi bill expired. I believe we should be able to use our gi bill when the servicemen and women see fit. It takes time for people to heal. We paid money and we paid with our life for this country. Let's give back to the veterans !!!! ThanksREPORT COMMENTS

My husband risked his life for his country only to have his military education mean nothing when a big bureaucratic glitch prevented him from getting national licensure in his field. Now an online program exists that will qualify him to sit for his licensure, but we can't afford it because we're struggling and his GI bill is now expired. Feels like no one even cares about the sacrifices he's made.REPORT COMMENTS

I have never used my Vietnam-era education benefit due to family and work circumstances. I have received less pay for many years because I lack a bachelors of science degree. Today I am at a point in my life where I can complete my education. Sadly, the benefit I had earned through 1981 is no longer available to me.REPORT COMMENTS
