These enforcement methods cause poverty not only are these unconstitutional but its amodern day deptors prison in some states they dont even provide representation by a lawyer on the grounds of it being a civil matter chargeing people with a felony further hinders ability to pay but being unable to drive and pull yourself out of poverty is cruel these laws need repealed it not only hurts the child and person ordered to pay but also cost tax payers to house feed and manage the inmates who have been proscuted and whom are dependant on food stamps and public services due to the innability to travel many who fall into this catch 22 often seek criminal ways of paying the obligation -

I was paying child support then I got a letter from the d.m.v stating my license will be suspended in 30 days for none payment of child support. I went straight to child support to show them the letter because it had to be a mistake they take 50% of my check per week for c.s. when I asked them about it they said I must sign a contract with them . I read it and didn't want to give up any of my rights so I left and they took my license then I lost my job haven't worked since never paid another penny to c.s. that was 12 years agoREPORT COMMENTS

I’m a truck driver and live in a rural area. Without my license I not only have been unable to get work but I don’t know how I would be able to get there if I found work without breaking the law. It has not only hurt my family at home but my children I pay support for are getting nothing. There is an occupational license for a drunk driver that can be obtained but not for a guy that fell behind because of the economy on his child support!REPORT COMMENTS

This is the most rediculous law in the world. I’ve had 3 suspensions this year. I have medical conditions but they don’t care. I have no rears but if I miss one payment even if it’s my employers fault I’m punished. Insurance doesn’t care if your license is suspended for dui or child support payments, it’s considered the same. Wow what a racket.i can’t wait to leave this f****d up state. I was seventeen when I had my first two children. Never even had a driver's license and at that age not many ppl keep a job for very long before moving on to another. The moms left me because again we were young. I was working and wanted a family but understandably they were scared and went to live with there family. Now I'm 28 have never had a license. Have been to jail multiple times for driving without a license and no insurance have been through countless jobs partially due to not having a license or going to jail for not having a license. At my age now I just want to work and take care of my kids. I now have a third child and I'm to scared to take him to daycare before work because if I get pulled over for no insurance then they find out I don't have a license I go to jail for at least four days and what happens to my son then? My entire adult life has been very full of anxiety due to this. Cops here in belgrade Montana have nothing to do a lot of the time so they pray on people like me who they know don't have a license. I don't speed I use my turn signals o do everything right in order to not draw attention to my self but they know my face and that license is suspended so if I'm seen I'm going to jail. I start another new job Monday. A town over. I hope I can work there long enough to get my license and finally after eleven years bring this nightmare to an end. To make it all the sweeter I'm on federal probation now because I decided to sell drugs and and bought some bad guns from a neighbor a few yrs ago. I couldn't ever hold a job long and gotta make money one way or another. So if I get pulled over or my p o even finds out I'm driving I'll go back to prison for at least ten months because I'm in violation of my terms of release. I'm already 23thousand in debt from child support alone. When you go to prison they keep charging child support. I don't know what to do. Yep this penalty is ******** I've watched my brother in law pay his child support which isn't that much 400$ a month and they still suspended his licence meaning he's got to drive to work without making a cycle of him being pulled over ticketed and now having to go to court on the 16th of April for it maybe spending time in jail just because of a shitty abused penalty I'm not saying there shouldn't be a penalty just this one is totally wrong he's payed over 1000 dollars and I read he can apply for it back or whatever but he's gotta go to court for that as well which if u live where I live not a taxi and how would he have money for a taxi if he can't work lol kk curropt politiciansREPORT COMMENTS

Courts have authority to suspend a license granted to a Child Support obligor by a state. This power is frequently passed on to Child Support Enforcement employees that have authority and direct access to the Department of Motor Vehicles license data base. The obvious license subject to suspension is the driver's license, but states issue licenses for a variety of occupations. Because these licenses are required to work in the particular occupation, license suspension can be a serious matter to an obligor. Is all non payment of support deliberate or could it be the result of economic hardships imposed due to erroneous license suspensions? In many places public transportation to and from work is not an option. Most people require a driver's license in order to stay employed. How can it benefit a child to take away the one thing that may allow a parent who has fallen behind in support to eventually catch up? Example: A truck driver, construction worker or salesman is laid off or injured on the job and unable to work. They apply for benefits and find either there is no insurance or there is a waiting period before benefits begin (at a fraction of earnings) resulting in a duration without income. They inevitably fall behind in everything (not just child support). Child Support responds by suspending their license until caught up. Attempts to return to work are met with "the position is no longer available" or, "unable to accommodate injury." Child Support is notified of the situation and responds with "find work elsewhere." What is often not considered is that most employers will not hire qualified people in these fields without a valid license. They are turned away until they get their license and support issues straightened out. Many professions require valid driver's license in order to use a professional license which influences employ-ability as a result. This becomes a downward spiral for the "obligar" and has a direct impact on the child that would benefit from the support. So, how do they get caught up if they are not employable in their field? How can taking away a parents ability to seek, obtain or keep employment benefit their children? In the overall picture license suspension punishes the child more than the obligated parent. This is happening to women with children as well. Not only fathers. The system has gone wild and affects everyone. Written from a mother (kids now over 18) and finishing paying off arrears only now. Unemployed through no fault of my own and walking a tightrope now doing my 100% to secure a position in my field before unemployment runs out. Right now at post office mailing my $15 to DMV to avoid suspension after clearing up notice to suspend drivers license as unemployment garnishment in effect. Yea, I even felt suicidal last night. My boyfriend just got notice that his license is going to be suspended due to past due child support. He is currently unemployed not receiving unemployment and due to his prescribed blood pressure medicine making him pass out broke his foot and leg. He can't work until he heals . He loves his son and wants to pay but has had this string of bad luck and if they take his license away how is he supposed to get to work? This makes no sense. However taking someone license to drive hurts the child it also hurts the bond how can a parent pick up there child with no permit, or work? There needs to be a better way a path way to drivers permit something you get your permit, pay stay current for six months get to keep it, people need a chance to start over after job loss or hardship, this taking license does nothing but hurt people trying to do the right thing. Yes the child deserve support from both parents however taking permit only cause more problems. And alot or most jobs don't hire without one. I work in the oilfield in Texas and I drive a company vehicle two hours one way to work everyday they suspended my license due to non payment but I have sent a personal check and I am working again but there are times in the oilfield that you may stay with a company for years but in the pipeline industry where I work it varies sometimes we may go threw several companies a year just to stay working and I also have a wife and three children I at home I am trying to support I can’t just send money every week out of my pocket to cover child support but I do always manage to get back to work within days of another job however it takes several weeks sometimes for new company to get payment to child support what I am getting at is if I cannot drive I cannot work therefore not only is the child I am supporting not getting money neither is my wife and children at homeREPORT COMMENTS

I could have had a job. But I don't have a valid license. Furthermore the child support office is an hour away lol I gave up looking for work I owe a lot of money about a third is interest to Oklahoma. 12,000 worth of interest. I make 1700 per month and had other kids on birth control. I currently owe for about 5 warrants because I have tickets from driving on a suspended. I'm so far in debt I will never get out. I'm on food stamps and that is without even paying the support I owe. If I could drive I could have had a job and not be a mooch on public assistance... They will eventually probably put me in jail or something but I'm not sure how that would help either. This system is outdated. It was designed in an age where women couldn't get high paying jobs. Courts should stay out of people's personal affairs and Grant joint custody without child support. Unless of course there's other reasons why that wouldn't work. I got behind because I was injured. Then I found a job and didn't know my license was even suspended. Got pulled over and given a ticket then was screwed because I needed my license for that job. This whole system is designed to screw you. My ex adopted another child as well and had two more... Oklahoma takes what he owes and deducts those other kids from his part. So the way it's calculated it's messed up as well...I will always be poor and unless I take to the streets and rid myself off any bills I will always be poor because 7.50 an hour pays for what? I am not someone with my license suspended due to child support but I know a few people who have their license suspended due to delinquent child support and all it does is puts a strain on the obligator. The obligator has to find rides to and from work while never knowing if someone will be willing, available, or even reliable enough to provide transportation. Some individuals live out in nowhere and the closest areas that have jobs can be as far as 30 minutes to an hour away....who would even be committed to helping anyone in that nature? What if the obligator found a higher paying job but can’t get to it because the process of finding someone to take them to and from work doesn’t work out as they hoped??? All this nonsense does is MAINLY hurts the child and secondly puts more pressure and unnecessary stress and anxiety on the obligator which in turns makes the obligator more unhealthy. Obligators need to get to and from work without having to jump through hurdles to support their child(ren). If the obligator cannot get to work...the obligator has a higher chance to be in a more delinquent state.REPORT COMMENTS

I admit I owe arrears but since being on child support, the times I was able to work, I basically had to get a job that only covered my arrears and child support which left me with little to no money for other things such as bills and rent just to name a few, my son mother admitted to me that she’s using the money I worked for to give to my son she was using it to provide to his siblings which very disheartening, when I’m not their father. Throughout the years I have lost many job opportunities to make a good living. I’ve been out work for a year now, and today had another opportunity to make good living... I was denied the opportunity because even going further in the potential employment I was told I needed a valid license before even being considered, anybody in their right mind knows that the ability to be able to take care of their debt and still be able to somewhat maintain a healthy financial environment within there selves would hop to it. It’s no way us as men can provide with these kind of standards. I ask that the powers that be make alil easier on non custodial parents. The child support enforcement system is causing people to lose their way of survival. Fathers are made to look like deadbeats because there are mothers who are ALLOWED to abuse the system. My husband went from a great relationship with his son and $0 in arrears to no visitation with his son, $23,000 in arrears and a suspended drivers license all in one year. His ex threatened to “ruin his life” if we got married and days after the wedding he received court papers in the mail. She went to court asking for back child support from 2012 until 2018 and won!! His license was suspended before court was even done and his arrears increased to $23,000. He is literally lost all hope of what to do. No one listens or cares or wants to help. He is dismissed when he calls the child support helpline and the judge played lawyer for his ex and basically told him too bad! How is this legal?? He needs help. Don’t know where to turn!! Do not take this law off the books. For 10 years I have been going threw nonpayment of child support. The father already has 90 days to pay, go into father program, call and let them know you are sick. lost job so they can work with you. My ex makes over 60,000.00 a year and still refuses to pay on time. Owes 6,000.00 in back support only has to pay 6,000.00 a year no insurance. He is a truck driver so this is the only way to light that fire under him or jail time which in 10 years has only been used twice. I have our child full time , he is to take her 4 days out of the month. That does not happen nor does he take her for summer, Christmas, never. To whom it may concern, the child support Dept. has had my driver license. Suspended due to child support payments I rec'd for my children, when he claims he had our children at the time. All false based on my proof. I recently gave him more the half the money the courts awarded him over 15 years ago. Because I missed the court date because I knew nothing about it, it ended in the results that I owed my x husband so much money when before he walked into court he owed me 3 times that amount. It's was obvious that he lyed in court. So because he has now took an inheritance from me and there is more then half of what they say I owe to his name. My license is still on hold. This has made it almost impossible for me to get to work or to live a normal life. Suspended driver license only make it harder for a person to clear their deths off or to get to work. Change this unjust law so that a person like me in my situation don't suffer for the wrong reasonsREPORT COMMENTS

You're right **** child support taking money I mean stealing money from people that owe child support. I owe child support because I didn't have a job to support my family and my wife applied for government aid. They took 25% of my check when I started working saying I owe child support but my wife only received $50 a month from that money child support took from me $50 bucks a month for 2 children are u serious? They don't care for someones child being taken care of they care about getting rich stealing from people. Child support will suspend your driver's license so that you can't work fall behind on payments and owe more money to them not your children. Oh and they also play a little game called interest charge for not sending payments when they damn well know you don't send payments because you're unemployed and not that you're refusing to pay!!! **** child support and their mama!REPORT COMMENTS

I have delt with the system for over 20years. I too have falling so far behind that at my age.. when i do pass on there will still be a very very large amount of arrears left over.. I asked the case worker what happens to the remaining amount of arrears... She replied nothing happens.. she says they simply close the case and thats that...REPORT COMMENTS
