Stop The Choking Game

Messages Sent So Far
There is an alarming wave of deaths among our country?s youth; a wave that continues to go unnoticed by mainstream media. Adolescents across the nation are victims of unintentional fatalities caused by their participation in the ?choking game? and though known by many names, the intent is to pass out purposely for amusement or for a ?buzz?. This silent epidemic that focuses the most brutal results on our very young middle schoolers, remains hidden from public attention because currently there is no way to accurately track and report the number of cases. This lack of statistical proof also limits prevention efforts promoted by the grass-roots organization of the thousands of grieving families who have lost a child to this insidious ?game?.

As your constituent, I have signed my name below to ask that you help us help our children by doing the following:

1. Call the CDC and request to be briefed on the issue of the ?choking game?.

2. Support the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services by requesting that the World Health Organization add a sub code that includes the ?choking game? as a cause of death.

3. Include the ?choking game? among the health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth in the CDC?s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and make the YRBS affordable and accessible for all states.

4. Support the CDC?s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) model of education as the means to disseminate information regarding the ?choking game?.

Enduring the death of a child is heartbreaking. As my representative to Congress, I ask that you help me prevent other families from this heartache by showing your support in establishing statistical evidence of the ?choking game,? Your efforts will assist us in heightening awareness among teens and their parents, teachers, and health care providers.

Thank you,

My son's 13-year-old first cousin died from this "game" the week before Thanksgiving. The family is heartbroken. Please help ensure other families don't have to endure this type of overwhelming, unnecessary pain.

I lost my little brother on November 21, 2011 to the choking game. He was 13 years old. I will do all that I can to make this "game" stop. I am the oldest of 6 kids, and this has completely torn me apart.

Communities must learn about this before it happens and it has to stop being the ?take action after the fact? info. Educating parents to know the signs and educate the teachers and school staff to notice behaviors and headaches and sore eyes as side effects and not just tired athletes. Good kids die from thinking it?s not deadly!

I lost my 13 YO grandson to TCG nearly 7 years ago. I agree whole heartedly with every word in this petition. Please take action on behalf of education and and government recognition of this as a real and serious threat to our young people.

I am a Paramedic who had the misfortune to have to perform CPR and attempt to revive the son of my children's pediatrician. This deadly activity claims children's lives deadly, but because there are scant statistics it is often difficult to get the attention of parents and other care takers until it is to late. Please help us to prevent this deadly activity.

My 14 year old son died in 1999. A senseless preventable death, he was bright, healthy, compassionate, sensitive, curious, a good kid. Gone because of some stunt to get a head rush. Thousands have died since his death. No one knows just how many because of this failure to list the death correctly. WHO needs to assign a death category for this and others will follow. If officials knew the great extent of deaths from this so called game that even 2nd graders are trying now, education and prevention would follow. Please help, the life you save may be one that means the world to you.

My 13-year old nephew died from this game, a tragedy that education could have helped prevent. Also, kids who teach other kids how to do this, or do it to other kids, have to know that there are consequences. Again, education. Please. The sorrow - there are no words.

Sad that promising young lives are lost and those left behind grief for probably the rest of their lives. Awareness needs to be spread to those at risk.

My nephew died from this horrible act, it is not a game it is a sin over riding the children who don't know any better. We can all put a stop to it if we all do something about it. Talk to our children and explain in detail, help others, ask our children what kind of fun games they play.

My smart, handsome nephew is gone now because of this game, and our family will grieve for a long time to come. No parent should go through what my brother and sister in law have endured.
