Stop The Choking Game

Messages Sent So Far
There is an alarming wave of deaths among our country?s youth; a wave that continues to go unnoticed by mainstream media. Adolescents across the nation are victims of unintentional fatalities caused by their participation in the ?choking game? and though known by many names, the intent is to pass out purposely for amusement or for a ?buzz?. This silent epidemic that focuses the most brutal results on our very young middle schoolers, remains hidden from public attention because currently there is no way to accurately track and report the number of cases. This lack of statistical proof also limits prevention efforts promoted by the grass-roots organization of the thousands of grieving families who have lost a child to this insidious ?game?.

As your constituent, I have signed my name below to ask that you help us help our children by doing the following:

1. Call the CDC and request to be briefed on the issue of the ?choking game?.

2. Support the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services by requesting that the World Health Organization add a sub code that includes the ?choking game? as a cause of death.

3. Include the ?choking game? among the health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth in the CDC?s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and make the YRBS affordable and accessible for all states.

4. Support the CDC?s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) model of education as the means to disseminate information regarding the ?choking game?.

Enduring the death of a child is heartbreaking. As my representative to Congress, I ask that you help me prevent other families from this heartache by showing your support in establishing statistical evidence of the ?choking game,? Your efforts will assist us in heightening awareness among teens and their parents, teachers, and health care providers.

Thank you,

These are stoppable deaths. They aren't from cancer or tragic accidents. They are from uninformed, unaware youth. We have the answers to stop this. We need help getting it out there to communities, schools, children and parents.

Individuals disseminating information or promoting this "chocking game" should be subject to criminal prosecution when it results in injury or death.

This is not a game and should he talked about to every child or adolesent from their parents, doctors and teachers. We are losing too many children to this horrific tragedy our children call a game. Many parents are not aware that is so called “game” even exists till it is to late. I recently had a friend whose son, age 13, died from this “game” . We will never forget this loving boy who was so full of life. His life was taken way to early and this could have been prevented if there was much more awareness and discussions by doctors and teachers.

How heartbreaking it is to see beautiful, wonderful young lives taken so early from a sick game... it needs official address and warnings.

My son Nathan was playing this game. Had I known what to look for I might have been able to save him, I will never know. He died on September 17th 2017. My son loved life and everybody in it. He didn't know the consequences. Schools should be educating children and parents on this issue. If there is one thing I will do in his memory, it will be to continue to share these posts. If children can be saved then I am on board.

Lost a vibrant friend to this "game". I will do my part to raise awareness within the youth of our community and hopefully prevent more tragic instances.

I lost my only child to this game last month. A 13 year old boy named Nathan. A vibrant prankster, adored by his mother, and quite the accomplished whitewater kayaker for a boy his age. Very well known amongst the paddling community here in the western Carolinas, and even had paddling friends as far as Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. We are certain that he learned about this at school, but I was both confused and angered to learn that many schools refuse to recognize this threat to our children. All parents should be aware of this. At least they should know what the most common warning signs are. His mom and I have led an empty life since this happened and see no end in sight. There was no warning and no warning signs that we picked up on until after it was too late. I will try my best to make every parent aware of this, as knowledge is indeed power. Had we known 2 months ago what we know now, who knows???
