I too lost my husband to suicide. I chose to return to work after a week. Grieving is different for each person and suicide is very traumatic. Especially if they watched the person die as I did. Losing a spouse or child requires focused grieving which also requires lots of physical and emotional energy.REPORT COMMENTS

I completley agree. My mom lost my dad to stomach cancer, an i watched her heart fall to the ground when he took his last breath. She would be driving down the road an forget where she was going. But yet she still had to go back to work. So yes it should fall under FMLA. When everything in your life as fallen to pieces you need time to grieve an rethink alot.REPORT COMMENTS

I lost my husband to a brain tumor three months ago and had to keep working the entire time. For those who don't know, death by brain tumor usually entails severe disability. Patients lose the ability to stand, walk, feed themselves, and eventually most cannot even speak. In addition, the person usually has to urinate every three hours or so, so for the spouse who has to work every day, they are going to be woken up 2-3 times a night to attend to bathroom needs and clean if there is a mess. Families need more help. Even the proposed would not have helped me, however, because I am an independent contractor and had to go part time due to obvious family reasons, so I wouldn't have qualified. This will help full time workers, but it will not help all workers.REPORT COMMENTS

I lost my husband 11/28/2013. I am being pressured to return to work as a nurse and yet I am in no way mentally or physically up to it due to my overwhelming grief. My every waking moment is sheer mental torment at this time and I would be a danger to my patients were I to return to work now!REPORT COMMENTS

My spouse is dying, and I am lucky to have an understanding employer who will give me lots of leave. All bereaved spouses should have this opportunity. I struggle daily with thoughts of ending my own life - during this time we should not have to worry about work on top of everything.REPORT COMMENTS
