Cutting NSF funding for political science research may be a fiscally unsound decision. NSF funding for political science has contributed to the creation of politically relevant databases of use to government officials, public policy experts, researchers and the American public at a cost likely to have been far lower than if they were collected by private firms or government agencies. Cutting political science funding may thus have the unintended consequence of increasing data acquisition expenditures for federal, state and local governments above and beyond the relatively small amount that is currently allocated for political science research. -

These measures do nothing to reduce government expenditures. Instead they subject a legitimate scientific discipline to the political guillotine. As a discipline, political science provides critical insights into the governmental institutions that shape everyone's lives.REPORT COMMENTS

As a student of political science, I urge you to recognize the importance of the study of politics. The relationship between a government and its people is a question that requires deep exploration. Eliminating the NSF's political science program will do nothing to solve the budget deficit, but it will deter political scholars from gaining any insights about the extremely polarized politics that got us into this mess.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a professor at Michigan State University. NSF funds can help educate undergraduate and graduate students by providing the opportunity to participate in a research project. With my colleagues, I have received NSF grants to study news coverage of local politics, a very important issue as many localities have little to no news coverage with the decline of newspapers. In addition to funding an important project that has yielded many publications, NSF funds enabled our team to hire a number of undergraduate and graduate student workers to assist with the research, providing some excellent students with the chance to learn from experience by being part of a large research team.REPORT COMMENTS

Political Science Research helps to form our foreign policy analysis (in addition to many other beneficial things). I cannot fathom why we would want to weaken American standing abroad.REPORT COMMENTS
