Literally thousands of individuals have still not fully recovered from the devastating effect of Hurricane Ike. Our region desperately needs these funds to still be available past September 30, 2010. The timeline for the proper disbursement of funds and implementation of programs to bring about a full recovery was entirely too short to make a long-term impact and the deadline should be pushed back.REPORT COMMENTS

I work directly with families impacted by Hurricane Ike. Many of these families are living in deplorable conditions. While the grant was awarded in 2008, the funds did not become available until much later. The monies were designated for a need and the need is still there. Time was just not on the side of those helping. It would serve our families and communities to extend the time to use the SSBG funds.REPORT COMMENTS

As a state emergency manager in Virginia, I can attest that too often those not on the front lines grossly underestimate the time it takes to achieve recovery goals in significant disasters. Since the grant will not add to the deficit, it seems only just to continue the grant appropriation so its full potential can be achieved.REPORT COMMENTS

Having been involved with local organizations working together to identify and assist families affected by Ike, Katrina, and other such events proves the need for funds continues. The processes that have to be followed limits the speed and swift action needed to complete projects by the grant deadlines established.REPORT COMMENTS
