I served 8 long years in Atwood Camp. Living on the 3rd floor was an additional punishment in the summer months. In 130-degree weather the only way I could breath and sleep was to soak myself wet to fall asleep. In the middle of the night my cloths would totally be dried and I'd have to repeat the soaking. I had to sneak to soak my cloths, as the rules didn?t permit showers after 11pm, Come on! Locked in and helpless. My health suffered while the staff sat in air-conditioned offices wearing sweaters. Instead of supplying basic needs as cold drinking water and ice to help the women from dehydration, the ice machine was locked permitting one cup of ice per person, that cup melting seconds after being dispensed. The BOP prison system is a 3rd world country tucked from away from all Americans to see, hiding all the human rights violations that our Country mandates that the world follow. My punishment was being isolated from my family. To endure overcrowding, cruel and harsh treatment that's preventable only added to my suffering.

I did 42 months here and the building temp was not safe at times. One winter the heat was shut off the next week the outside temp dropped to below freezing. The Warden would not allow it to be turned back on. The windows leaked I woke up to a flood from a storm inside my room. The summer was so hot at times sleeping was impossible. The ladies of Atwood are humans that made mistakes and she be treated in humanity.

I spent some time at Atwood, That's what the satellite camp is called and I'm pretty sure that most of what the complaints are about are very true. The staff don't do anything to help...It's extremely hot in the building during summer...I lived on the third floor...it is inhumane...NO ONE deserves to live like that! Yeah we made mistakes but we are doing time away from EVERYTHING, EVERYONE...that should be enough.

They are pitiful there. They just got a brand new walking track! It's awful! They have over two pages worth of commissary items to shop from once a week! They even have hair dye and a beauty shop in the unit! They are submitted to three hot healthy meals a day. That's an insult! They should be getting them good hot meals they used to get at those bridges they used to live under. They just trying to get trouble started to get them released early. They got it better than the troops.

The horrible conditions in this prison and in prisons across the U.S. should not be part of any prisoners' punishment.

Since this petition was posted, nothing has changed. The population report states 345 inmates in a facility that holds less than 200. They have placed beds in the hallways even after the fire marshall told them to move them. The inmates were threatened by a counselor that if they told the one tv in the facility would be taken away. The facility is so old that the fire doors are not up to standard and in the event of a fire 350 women will try to evacuate out of one door. The healthcare situation has declined even more. An inmate came from the hospital less than 24 hours post hysterectomy with an order of pain meds every 4 hrs. She was told she would have to wait until the next pill call. She went 17 hours with no pain meds post major surgery and then was only given meds at 6am and 3pm pill lines. This is far from a 4 hr order from the surgeon. My friend has a bulging disc and woke up in extreme pain and vomiting from the pain. Either the disc is on a nerve or it has herniated and is on a nerve. No one from the medical center will see her...said she had to wait for sick call tomorrow. So she will go 24 hours in extreme nerve pain. Not only is this pain debilitating, it can cause permanent nerve damage. Another incident occured when an inmate had a hysterectomy and she started hemorrhaging. They would not come see her from the medical center. An ambulance was called and when she got to the hospital she was hemorrhaging and could have bled to death. They are not treated in a humane way. The staff does not care! I believe my loved one deserves to serve her time but not in 130 degree heat, basically the worst healthcare you can imagine, and now they are down to one ice machine for 350 women. But hey they all got new lockers! when nothing was wrong with the ones they had. When the federal inspectors came through they kept them from going to the 3rd floor and hid many things from the inspectors. But the government inspecting the government? Whats the point? The staff tells everyone it doesnt get above 90 degres in the facility..well the warden needs to open his eyes...if it is 90 outside and you have a solid block building with no air conditiner...and the windows will not open for air flow what do you have? Basically a sauna reaching 130 degrees. I do not know why the fire marshall, the health and human services, the medical board and the Joint Commission are not all the the front steps of this facility demanding changes. Something has to be done about these conditions and what is it going to take for the federal government to listen, even a disaster to many or a few is of no concern apparently to anyone except those of us who have loved ones housed in this hell hole!

It is sadly hypocritical that the U.S. marches around the world spreading our "liberty and justice for all", while it ignores the basic human rights of its own citizens. The incarceration rate and sentencing structure is simply absurd; I hope one of our hundreds of distracted representatives recognizes the urgent need for change.

I find this appalling, over half the inmates in federal prisons are there for Non violent drug crimes sentenced to ridiculously long mandatory minimums from an outdated failed war on drugs! This treatment amounts to unfair, cruel and unusual punishment and needs to stop!

My mom just got out of Atwood in April. She was sent to Alderson, where she nearly died due to wrong medication. She was at Atwood for 8 months and received the worst medical care you can imagine. The place is housing over 350 women. There is no air condition and only two ice machines for all of these women. Carla P. wrote about her mother, whom just so happened to be my Mom's best friends while there. This is a place that needs to be closed.

My mother is 70 years old and is housed at Lexington FMC. She has had a stroke since being there and the doctor there,Molera, will not put her on the correct medication to keep her out of the hospital. She has been in the hospital 5 times since being there. What the hell is going on? I want something done pertaining to the treatment of my mother. It is inhumane the way she is treated there and also against her constitutioonal rights as a human being in the united states of America. It is shameful to our government to have our elderly treated in such a manner.

I did time there, it is ungodly in the summer!! The prison structure itself is unsafe and needs to be torn down, The BOP is a business and they are WAY overcrowded there with people living in the halls, literally. It was 130 degrees in my room this past summer (2012). Conditions there are contemptable! Shame on the U.S. Government.

This is just a bunch of shit...no one should live in theses conditions specially me mother who was sent there march 14th I totally understand she should be punished but no where close to what I've been reading about this hell hole the federal government is calling a prison. How can u guys even treat others like this I'm sure u wouldnt like if Ur family was in the same boat of course not u guys like Ur better than my mother u guys got another thing coming. I honestly believe everyone in this world should be treated equal just because u have a better house or car or life period but materials things doesnt matter its what's in the heart that counts so plz stop letting the federal government treat people (my mother) this way its not right they r basically trying to kill us off one by one and this whole family will fight as long as it takes
