This facility,Camp Atwood, is ran by the Bureau of Prisons. The building has black mold, asbestos, no air conditioning, and in the winter time they turn of the boilers. Turning off the boilers results in no heat for the inmates. One inmate that left the facility has severe lung issues as a result of being incarcerated at this facility. The facility is classified as a medical facility however, it is not. My mother has been there for 1 year and 7 months and she has cancer and multiple health conditions that haven't been watched. She received the basic routine check-up and blood work when she arrived there and nothing more. They gave her a cane to walk with due to having bursae and spine problems and an elevator pass. The elevators never work and she has to climb stairs along with other handicap inmates that are wheelchair bound. Let's face it the ladies at this facility are there for white collar crimes not violent ones. It's a shame and a waste of taxpayers money to have them at the facility. -

After hearing about the conditions of this faculty in this thread, I would like to know who oversees this satellite camp. I realize that it is subcontracted and not ran by the Federal government alone. Who is responsible to correct these conditions? Many women are being affected daily in a very unhealthy building. If someone will direct me to the correct agency that will honestly investigate and correct the major problems, I will stand up to help these women( and workers) along with anyone willing to stand beside me. It is a shame that this hasn't been checked into already! It makes me lose more faith for the Justice System. I am digusted. Thanks.REPORT COMMENTS

Atwood (FMC Lexington Satellite camp for women) should be shut down. The building needs condemned, falling down walls, broken windows. windows that don't open or don't close, lead pipes. leaking sewer pipes that actually drip on a person, asbestos are among the many things that need repaired-replaced in this old building. I lived on the 2nd floor for 10 months. The average indoor temperature last summer was at least 100 + and above on the 3rd floor. The guards are very rude and verbally abusive to the women. The steam heat didn't work half the time this last winter. During this last winter, the indoor temperature was 3 degrees to warm to qualify for emergency heat to be turned on. Alot of times there was no hot water or even water at all. There isn't much for programming (classes) or recreation to keep these women busy to help pass their time.REPORT COMMENTS

This is totally unhumane. The way they are treated in there is stupid, just send them home. Their family's need them home. No one can stand to sit in 134 degree weather in the summer. That is ridiculous!! Why can they not come home and be put on house arrest?! They are not a problem, they are not a threat to our society!! Facility is totally unacceptable it's full of asbestos, my throat hurts EVERYTIME I visit the facility, I've been in construction over 20yrs and whole building is full of it. Even though the season has changed its extremely cold in the facility no heat in visitation and I believe I caught a cold there last week from freezing in visitation room, I ask the guard why there was no heat, he smiled and said this is Prison, my response is its inhumane and I'm not an inmate, honestly I see so many non-violent offenders that are confined to wheelchairs, walkers and canes it makes no sense to house them I ask myself why wouldn't the Government give home confinement and save the Government millions, seems as if the government works off money not morals, 70% of the women at Atwood are no threat to the community whatsoever, and the craziest thing is if your resitivism level is very high meaning no family connections or support the BOP releases those inmates first which with really no accredited programming or real job training nor education those with a high resitivism would be lucky to get a job at Mc Donald's so guess what many of them return within 6months of leaving Lexington FMC, sounds like they are running a revolving door to keep those unicorp jobs rolling and money coming in to the government, mean while if you have family support, get visits, have a degree and resources the facility wants keep you locked up , and tell those inmates they'll bounce back whenever they get out, it's a shame those individuals that chose to do something else with the 24hrs each day then someone else should be punish for having attempted to make better life choices, and also being told by the staff that the BOP can do what we want long as your in our custody, honestly the Government needs step in a mandate more training add new staff that haven't been in the system for 20yrs. So they really don't care to change anything or any practice that has been going on for the last 20yrs. These people are human, we all make mistakes everyone deserves a second chance but rarely will even know about the SECOND CHANCE ACT 2007, because the CM doesn't want to do the paperwork, nor take a recommendation from the sentencing Judge nor utilize the program's and the government laws to help people get back to there lives and family. It's very sad I'm starting here but I intend to be heard in Washington DC.REPORT COMMENTS

When I was there in 1993 the warden was wearing a monitor. I worked in facilities...and those lead pipes are deadly...the water was unsafe back then...I was on renaissance unit..we called t little Vietnam...the place was infested with Brown recluse spiders...we used to soak down in the shower to cool off...it literally was like a third world place...we filed a law suit over the commissary funds...Washington vs justice dept...we won...Lexington is notorious for disregard...we even had a sit down riot there...my congressman and family had me moved...God help these women...cause they don't know how to fight for themselves...BRAVO...to the ones bringing this petition...keep it in their faces ladies...cause out of sight is truely out of mind.....one more thing....if anyone thinks these women aren't treated Like livestock...take a look at bluegrass unit...it was painted barn red..and derby horse names above the room doors. ...or should I say stalls....REPORT COMMENTS

I was sentenced to 12 months at this facility. 2004-2005. I felt I was truly "in prison" until after 3 months into serving my sentence I was involved in an "altercation" at my job site. (Landscaping) I was sent to the Lexington County Jail and was made to finish out my sentence in the jail instead of the camp! I was forced to serve out the remainder of my sentence of 9 months because my case manager at the Federal camp was black and decided she wanted the female I was in the altercation with who was also black...tocome back to the camp! This female was a commisary whore and thought she'd bully a nice white female into giving her some things! I stood oup for myself and got punished!! The county jail was the true punishment! This camp is a joke for anyone serving a sentence. I reflect on this time as a learning experience. I was grounded and lost my way briefly in the late 90's and my poor choices caught up with me. However, since I was released 10 yrs ago I've been responsible and conducted myself in a respectful manner. I recently looked online for information regarding my "past" and I curiously looked the female up I had an altercation with and what do you know...she's serving another sentence! There are those of us who learn from our mistakes and gain more than a number. And there are others who never learn and use their number as a free admission pass to have an all expense paid package to camp Hollywood! God blessREPORT COMMENTS
