If you work under a private pension you should be advised about this law before you are employed. My husand worked as firefighter for 22 years, from 1972 until 1984. He was away from home 26 hours a day every third day. Risked his life every day he worked. This is my testimony, the people who are the backbone of are country are being penalized for making us a better and safer nation. TEACHERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT,,FIREFIGHTERS,EMT'S. They protect you, your homes and businesses, save lives and teach and nuture your children. The government wants the best, but penalize them and their families. What are you thinking when a wife is left with a $600 pension and has to pay $300 for medical insurance you take $300 from your soal security benefits. Could you survive on $1000 dollars a month. Oh,I forget you get retirement for life, $175000.It is time for Congress to get to work and start working for the people that work for this country. We have Worked WORKED, never asked for a government handout ,paid are social security taxes. I do not want food stamps or Medicaid, or government housing,I am a proud American trying to take care of myself. I would appreciate respect. Do the right thing . My house is in order, time to get THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in order. Go to work for the people that WORK!!!! Thank you. -

His is a terrible idea. My husband and I have paid in all our lives. How does it make sense that the benefit I paid shoud be reduced solely because I have been a teacher for some years in a state that will not allow me to pay into SS?REPORT COMMENTS

Not well known, if you're a retired teacher and worked a lifetime 30 plus years in the CalSTRS system and worked concurrently with your own business and have a disabled wife and child all those years they face a major Social Securiy setbacks in their futire income benefits mounting to tens of thousands of dollars each year just because that educator chose to teach. I'm that educator, along with my disabled family members who are being discriminated against by this unfair set back in benefits and income. I'm not a double dipper, as some believe. I've put twice the amount into the system and get back less than half for myself and my family. I consider this a federal government penalty for being a lifetime public school teacher and business owner in California. This setback has created a financial hardship for my family, along with the tens of thousands of others with similar circumstance as mine. This is an unfair sequestration that has amounted and will amout to billions of dollars taken away from our families in California and across the nation. Repeal this unfair GPO/WEP legislation and bring Social Security Fairness back to the system.REPORT COMMENTS

I worked in the private sector and in private schools beore teaching for 30 years at a public school. I lose most of the social security that I assumed when working those jobs that I was accumulating. I paid into the system and I just want the little I should get. Why penalize me because I choose to go into public school teaching for low wages.REPORT COMMENTS

Repeal WEP/GPO because I am tired of going into the social security office and seeing new in migrants receiving benefits and Medicare when they never paid in. SS/Medicare should be given to those who pay in, not to anyone just arriving.REPORT COMMENTS

I worked 20 years before entering education! I earned 100% soc sec--with WEP/GPO I get 40%! If I sat on welfare my entire life I would qualify for spousal benefits--with WEP/GPO I do not qualify! This is not fair!REPORT COMMENTS

I DON'T have a large pension or 401 savings - I don't have good health to be working into my retirement years - SO I AM. REALLY relying on my Social Security to keep my husband and myself housed and fed. We are NOT Rich - we are DEFINITELY in the low-income bracket. We NEED our Social Security!!REPORT COMMENTS
