Not long ago I heard the great author, David McCullough, interviewed on 60 Minutes. He was promoting the idea of mid-life career changes for those interested in enriching the education of today's students. I thought to myself, "What a wonderful concept ...... except, once they learn of the WEP/GPO, I don't think they will be so eager to make the transition!"

I had to pay into SS for many years while working in other states but have to take a reduced SS benefit because of an IL teacher's pension.

The two laws are unfair. They simply must be repealed so I, and many other people can receive our earned benefits.

The WEP/GPO is a lying, thieving act that has absolutely ruined my life and that of my children. Since 1982, we've put up with this. DOES THE 14TH AMENDMENT NOT STATE CONGRESS MUST PAY IT'S DEBTS?

Please repeal WEP and GPO which has cause financial unfairness to me. I worked and contributed to Social Security for more than 25 years and it has been reduced significantly due to these unfair laws. Please, please reconsider this unfair law and repeal the WEP/GPO and protect earned and paid social security benefits which are so needed by those who earned them. Thank you, Linda Perrott

Please repeal WEP and GPO, which were hastily enacted to satisfy public emotion, and did not realize the suffering that was imposed upon people who were not allowed to plan because they were not informed of the impact, and the people who could not plan, because the legislation came just before their retirement and in my mother's case, caused severe financial hardship. Can't recoup when you are too old.

This law should be repealed immediately before it does any more harm to the public servants it affects. That the word "windfall" is actually in its name is enough to wonder whether people in congress actually understand that most of us get a fraction of what they make in a bad year. And all we want is the social security we worked for and paid into. Nothing more. Why would anyone become a second career teacher if they knew about this law. Most of us were never told about it. Shame on you if you do nothing about it again.

I am a Texan who is a retired teacher. A Spouse should be able to receive her husband's social security and not at a reduced rate. Both partners worked to have this security in their old age. The contribution is made by both spouses i.e. the reduction in the husband's take home due to the social security contribution..

My choice of employment should have absolutely no effect on what happens to the social security earned by my husband (spousal benefit.) I earned my social security in MD and it is unfair that I also be penalized for living in CA!

After having worked in private sector jobs for several years, most part-time over a 20 year period...(3 years in 1 full-time job), I went to work as a teacher's aide, and was first informed of this, 'we don't pay into Social Security as we have our own pension plan.' Little did I know how dreadful those words were...and the exact same words were repeated to me in 3 subsequent law enforcement records positions that covered a span of 22 years total. Yet, not ONE hiring person EVER explained the outcome upon retirement. NOT ONE! And no one ever gave me the choice to pay into SS myself. Oh, they DID take out for Medicare when it came along...but after being literally plowed-under when actually applying for SS, (which I didn't want to do.) the bad news was just heartbreaking. Simply heartbreaking. I even went back to work at age 68, in the private sector and got myself a $15 an hour raise...all the way to $112 per month. So someone on here who said she gets $600 a month,???? Feel very grateful for that. I actually got my first 'COLA' last year...and now I get the whopping big, $113 per month! Just imagine trying to plan living on that should my husband die before me....in that event, I will get NONE of his SS benefits! That's rignt...ZERO! ZILCH! ZIP! NONE! NIL! NADA! Even saying it like the above doesn't help ease the pain ... and I can no longer go to work...who is going to hire a now 75 year old female? Also, ladies, we are treated just as unfairly in our employment - for example, the difference in what a man is paid and how much less than that, how little a woman is paid for the same job. MOST of the time I worked with women, and although I never knew it for a fact, I am certain the few young males they hired were no doubt paid quite a bit more than I was. I recall President Obama saying during the 2008 campaign, 'if Congress could get the SSFA to his desk, he would sign it'....but he seems to have long ago forgotten those of us who are really suffering out here.... It just is not at all fair to have been treated like less than 2nd class citizens. And I have lost all respect for my former employers. What gives SS the right to deny me the benefits I DID pay into? Of course, I cannot go back for a do-over...and I did love my work, but that is all negated by this horribly unfair GPO/WEP. I have been fighting for this bill to be repealed for almost 13 years, since I retired...but things just look ,more bleak. Thanks to Ronald Reagan for the bind he put us in!

What is fair is fair. I, my deceased husband, and our employers PAID over 40 years into social security and half was taken away by this unfair law.
