As a parent who has firsthand knowledge of a law that does not work for my family member it only warehouses men especially young black men without any provision for any inmate learning any real world skills that would make any possible transition back into society even more difficult. Young men regardless of color who unfortunately made a mistake which is does not take them serving 85% of their sentence on a violent crime conviction to realize their choice was not good and in the case of my son who entered prison at the age of 17 with no previous crimes on his record along with being given a 25 year sentence what realistic hope after serving 85% of that sentence of getting a real chance to makeup for one choice which was not right when our politicians, celebrities, daily get a slap on the wrist only and repeated chances but 1st time offenders especially who commit a crime in their teens are refused even one chance it is pure hypocrisy to see any sense in our justice system when such prejudices exist that are solely meant to break individuals minds, bodies, and their souls so they never have anything too or they are too old too contribute something good back to society rather than being too institutionalized to be able to at the least exist in society. Lawmakers are one of of two things either they are the solution or nothing more than the actual problem which only hinder's necessary change and progress or backwards thinking from times past.

they will get out, then what-the longer they saty, the harder to adjust-for first time offenders, give them a chance! it's not like they won't be monitored, so many young kids in for so long for one stupid decision...not right, and since they will be part of our society, we can't just pretend they aren't!

My daughter at the age of 20 on Feb. 10, 2010 was sentenced to a 20 yr prison sentence for a purse snatching charge I tottaly agreed that she needed to be punished for her actions but not violence was used as of weapon, act of force, ect. The purse was snatched from a shopping cart at a local Walmart. Did she know better I have no doubt yes she did my husband has been in law enforcement for 18yrs. And I myself was a Lt. at a prison. And if she would have harmed someone physically I could see 20 yrs. She left behide a son 2 yrs, and a son 1 yrs. So when her time has been served they will be grown. Myself working for the prison system have seen inmates locked up for alot worst things doing less time. No I could not hire a high dollar lawyer for her as a grandmother trying to raise her sons its impossible. I think some of these cases need to be looked into..My grandsons need their mom through out there life.. Thanks You to each of u..
