This is an awful disciplinary approach. I'm not even a nurse and can't believe this law. Who is the moron that thought of this??Jan 30th, 2015Someone from Pittsburgh, PA writes:
I am a fantastic nurse I take pride in my job. I had two DUIs in almost 3 years due to stress in my life. I am not an alcoholic but they make you label yourself they make you go to an an eval at a rehab facility?! I got social drinker which is exactly what I did socially. This had nothing to do with my nursing license nothing to do with it I did not steal drugs from the hospital I did not wreck my car into the hospital due to my !! DUI. Have never once went to work drunk, hung over, I am a critical care nurse I take my job seriously I love my patients and they love me back if I had to get testimonials I would have hundreds this is ridiculous. I have to call an automated number five days a week to go see if I have to P in a cup. This has nothing to do with the board of nursing and it has all to do with the judicial system they can deal with my DUI not The Board of nursing and by the way it's not even the board of nursing that contact us at first if the go-between it gets reported and then they nab you. They say it's voluntary but then they threatened if you don't go through with it you will have to see an addictologist and deal with The board's legal department and their lawyers they try to scare you and intimidate you they make you cease practice of your license and quit your nursing job. It is $32 every time you have to go for a urine screen if you have a DUI. Some of the girls I'm in my group with and I don't care right now at this point I am so frustrated should be in jail all they got was fired. Some don't even have criminal charges against them for what they were doing at work yes at work as a registered nurse which they should be damn grateful for it they even were a nurse. I worked very hard while raising my three sons at home my house and worked long hours to get myself through nursing school and now I have to deal with this ********. I am fighting it I'm sick of going to the weekly groups I'm sick of the urine screens and most of all not having a job. I have applied for 24 jobs and I got two interviews out of these applications are you kidding me this is insulting and downgrading and it needs to be stopped. Yes if you're Diverting drugs and stealing your patients medications and shooting them up at work then you need to be in this program but not for a damn DUI.REPORT COMMENTS

this program may be good for those who need it but one mistake does not constitute a habitual or dangerous personREPORT COMMENTS

They violate nurses rights. You are forced into signing papers you don't understand. It destroys you financially.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been out of work for 8 months because of PNAP. I went into treatment for alcohol voluntarily and while I was in treatment I called them for assistance. I thought they were on my side and were going to help me get back to work. I was wrong, they threaten me and my license and have discriminated against me to return to the practice of nursing. They are out of control and are violating the rights of nurses everyday.REPORT COMMENTS

Publishing disciplinary action against a nurse on a public website, forever, is essentially a continued punishment even after the penalty for the charges has been completed. When a nurse has completed the conditions placed on him/her, then that's it----no further punishment should be applied. Publishing this information online forever is cruel & unusual punishment, because it is a punitive measure, and it MUST STOP. The BON effectively puts an end to a nurse's career by doing this & this is not legal. The BON's concern is "public safety", and that's fine. But when a nurse is no longer considered a threat to the safety of the public, the only thing the BON is accomplishing is continued punishment for their entire life, which is illegal. Nurses are shamed for the rest of their lives for actions which they're already ashamed of, and they are forever banished due to online reporting of their misconduct. After 7 years, even certain crimes are not reportable---so why should they remain online forever on a BON website? It is ironic that the BON's lock nurses into 5 year "contracts" full of urine drug screens, psych evaluations, rehab, counseling, meetings, etc. for the purpose of "rehabilitating" them, yet there is no possibility for a nurse to fully rehabilitate if they can't find a job due to what is publicly available online. Things that are published online by the BON's are not even accurate many times, but a nurse does not have any recourse to correct it. The Eighth Amendment of the Constitution prohibits cruel & unusual punishment, of which continued punitive action is considered. If a court isn't allowed to do this, why should the BON's be allowed to do it? Publishing information about a nurse's misconduct after the nurse has served their "sentence" is continued punitive action & it should be illegal for BON's to do this.REPORT COMMENTS
