My daughter is DeafBlind and while in school could have so benefited from the services of an Intervener to help fill in the pieces of what she was missing due to her vision and hearing loss, to help with concept and vocabulary development and in facilitating interactions with hearing and sighted peers. I wholeheartedly support the Cogswell-Macy Bill to help provide equal access to the school environment and a free and appropriate education without out having to fight and struggle for services and accommodations. With determination, Wideline graduated with a high school diploma and went on to complete a Certification from Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Baking and Pastry. She is currently the Lead Decorator at a Publix Bakery. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for even bright students with deaf-blindness. Because they lack the support in school, they frequently receive "special diplomas" that leave them unprepared to access post high school education and lead to high rates of un employment or under-employment, not commensurate to their true abilities. Cogswell-Macy would help to close this gap. -

While I agree with the idea behind this bill, I cannot consciously stand behind this bill. The word "intervention" has a negative connotation associated with it. It puts down the people who are trying to be enabled by alternate means to meet their communicative and perceivable needs. While intervention procures good results if careful and researched interactions occur, it almost always necessitates that the initiative has a deformity or has something that is not socially agreeable nor considered a "norm." I would reword the bill so it does not include such negatively associated words.REPORT COMMENTS
