The death in the extended family (parents, and siblings) can be sad. The death of a child (adopted, step, or grandchild), especially a young child is devastating. Parents should have adequate time to grieve their loss, just as those parents welcoming a child are allowed time to adjust to their new family member. In fact, parents suffering a loss should get more time (if needed) than those welcoming a new child to the family.

I would add that it needs to be added that the 12 weeks off not be 1/2 just because the parents both work for the same company. I did not know this little tidbit about the FMLA act until my husband and I began working for the same company. They took away time because the FMLA act allows for only 6 weeks each when the two family members work for the same company. We were already dealing with lost time from FMLA when we gave birth and to have our daughter die was devastating. Our company was like well you only have X number of days left with FMLA because you used this many days and your husband used this many.

Although my employers were fair, still the 8 weeks later I was not doing well. Pressure/deadline to return to work on top of everything was only making things worse. My son was a healthy, responcible young man. At 25 years of age, he had made all of the "right decisions" yet he died suddenly without warning of SCD, which had been misdiagnosed as anxiety. Sudden Cardiac Death due to a heart problem (in spite of having high blood pressure) was overlooked. Three heart defects in a person who had a very active life, who had a physical job. He did not smoke, drink more than an occasional beer and did not do drugs. Yet he is gone forever. This is the worst thing that could ever happen to us, his father and I.

Let's get this changed. It is ridiculous to think that any parent woud be able to go back to work after a few days of losing a child.

I couldn't imagine the pain of losing a child much less having to return to work soon after.

I understand the pain and grief of losing a child. Going back to work two weeks later was difficult. Suffering from panic attacks from shock and everday things was a chore.

This amendment should be worded to include step-children as well. Otherwise some insensitive employers could say, "Well that's not your REAL child." It's a loophole that must be closed.
