I was fired from a job after 11 months, partly to stop me from being able to use the FMLA! My son began high dose chemo a few weeks earlier. I wasn't able to find a job for the next two+ years! (I'm over 50) My emotional and financial life has been destroyed. My son died several months after I was fired. Am I bitter, hell yes. American firms shouldn't be able to treat employees like this! I couldn't take them to court because I had an at-will sales contract. I was told they could fire me for anything except age discrimination. I will let a higher power deal with the two individuals that pushed me out.Feb 18th, 2011Someone from Jacksonville, FL signed.

When I lost my child, I was fortune in that I had just retired two months prior. I WOULD HAVE NEVER went back to work in three days, not even THREE MONTHS!!!!!!!! It is a crying shame that parents aren't given this time already in a country and time when sssoooo many of our young children are lost in death.REPORT COMMENTS

i'm in strong support of the Kelly Farley amendment to the FMLA of 1993. i witnessed first hand the devsatating impact the death of a child had on a mother who worked in the office i once for in. our office was able to act with compassion and concern during the most challenging period of her loss - the first 6 months to a year, by allowing her the additional time off she requested beyond her leave bank. this amendment will ensure other employers will do the same. therefore, i urge all lawmakers across our great land to support this information amendment to a FMLAREPORT COMMENTS

3 weeks after my son was killed, I returned to work devastated. I could not focus on anything except him, I cried at my desk for a week straight, I was useless. I finally was just too embarrassed to show up so I took an additional 9 unpaid weeks. Luckily, I had worked with my boss for over 20 years, and he knew my son as well, that is what helped me to save my job.REPORT COMMENTS

I lost a child due to a car accident in 2001. This has been my ongoing complaint since. It is not fair we get to prepare for the birth of a child, i.e.buy things, create an environment, read up on it etc, but when that child is taken from us we are supposed to get on with life like they weren't even here, 3 days after the funeral. Losing a child takes way more preparation for the days ahead then preparing for one on its way. I know, I lived both!REPORT COMMENTS

The death of our daughter was the most horrendous experience of our lives. We are self-employed. Remaining on task with our business was awful for me. If it had been up to me to make a living at that point, we would be homeless now. My blessed husband had the fortitude to remain steady in the work but it took a huge toll on him later. The entire family is affected by the death of a child in countless and devastating ways. Even after 16 years, the effects are with us every day in one way or another. 12 weeks leave after the death of a child would not be enough to complete the grieving but at the very least, it would give one a chance to start.REPORT COMMENTS

The death of a child falls under take medical leave because of a serious health condition. Believe me, the death of a child is major depression!!! which is a serious health condition. I can't imagine any doctor not signing FMLA for the death of a child. I lost my daughter Jameka (age 23) to diabetes. Human Resources supported the doctor that I need extra time off!! I was off 7 weeks. (call if ? 4/371/-4464REPORT COMMENTS

We lost one of our twin boys and were left to grieve and care for our surviving son who had multiple medical problems. Fathers need to have the time to grieve the loss of a child as it is one of the most tragic and traumatic events you can experience in your lifetime,REPORT COMMENTS

We have broadened the death leave benefit at our office to expand the time off for immediate family members. In the five years we have done this we have not had any abuses - and emplyees have been grateful. The death of a child is especially traumatic - I agree that FMLA benefits apply to this horrible experience. I support this change.REPORT COMMENTS
