My PhD research regarding the consequences of online politics for the relationship between citizens and political authorities was funded by a grant from the NSF. Perhaps such work cannot directly be monitized or actionable, but this and related work in political science furthers public understanding of how political life is changing enabling both political authorities and citizen groups to better identify problems and opportunities. Most NSF grants explicitly require that the research address concerns of public interest. In this sense, it meets the same criteria of most other scientific domains. Theoretical physics and nonapplied research in chemistry or engineering likewise are not directly actionable, but without this work applied engineering advances in industry would come to a standstill. There is a reason why the top research journals in political science are published in the US and many of the top departments are located here. I've worked in European universities and on European grant projects and can tell you the scale of capabilities is significantly more limited and this is directly related to the differences in funding. Eliminating NSF funding risks surrenduring America's lead in this area.

This amendment is among the most ridiculous ever proposed. It must be opposed by any thinking person concerned about the intellectual integrity of the nation. Which, by the way, is the foundation for our security and the only basis for our economic success.

At a time when the common wisdom is that "Washington is broken," it is worth some investment to understand our system better.
