As a political science graduate student, I can attest to the tremendous importance of having NSF funding for political science. My future job and that of many others that I know will rely on this funding. Not to mention, the U.S. government has benefited enormously from political science research. To cut funding now seems misguided given the importance of a well-functioning government these days.

Federal denial of support for studies examining questions outside of security and economic interests clearly articulates that it is not important to understand how lawmakers behave, what the public knows, whether policies work, and so forth. It also is likely to stifle research in areas not related to security and economic interests - since much of what we know about those two topics sprang from investigations about other ones, the amendment actually makes achieving it's own misguided goals less likely.

Studying government, politics, and public policy is essential if we are to avoid serious policy errors.

This amendment is incredibly foolish and I am saddened that it is even being considered.
