Democracy is a participatory process but also a reflective one. The place to reflect on decisions and respond to both challenges and opportunities is not just in the halls of power but in the public forum - which includes academia. The hubris of the proposed amendment to eliminate grants for political science research at NSF is astounding -- Coburn as a politician wants to guide the people who study politics. The study of democratic structures is more important than ever and will continue despite the obstacles. However, it would be nice if elected officials would jump on board.

The defunding of scientific research, except where it's goals are obviously profitable to Tom Coburn is a terrible precedent to set, and a considerable misunderstanding of what science even is. I urge congress to reject this ignorant, self serving amendment by Mr. Coburn.

No human activity can ever be values neutral, but science tries and has standards in place to police itself. Even if Rep. Coburn disagreed with this or that particular study, he's wrong to imagine that political science research is ideologically driven. It's a social science, and its discoveries serve the common good.

Let's not promote greater political ignorance by pulling the plug on NSF funding for political science research.

I rest assured that these well qualified officials can better accurately judge which basic research best advances particular disciplines, than the reviewers at the NSF, who have the reputation of having the most rigorous peer review process in the sciences. I am sure the precedent set will have no impact on other research areas in public health, or earth sciences for instance, when other well qualified politicians (i.e. "I took a course in college") decide that cutting portions of these programs (that they don't like) will earn them some time on the news, or money in the war-chest. No, thank goodness for you, Tom Coburn, cutting the deficit one fraction of a percent at a time, and saving the country from actually learning something.
