Senator Coburn and the supporters of this legislation should realize that this makes it look like they are trying to suppress academic criticism of themselves. They have broken our political system, and now they are attempting to prevent any effort by academics to discover ways to fix it.REPORT COMMENTS

At a time when jobs are such an important topic, it is ridiculous that Congress would cut such a trivial amount of money out of research funding that supports the employment of numerous professors, students and staff across the country. Furthermore, the research that is having its funding cut is on topic that are eminently relevant to the difficult problems currently faced by our government at all levels. You talking about cutting off funding for, for instance, research on health policy decision-making and implementation at a time when states, localities, employers and citizens are in desperate need of such information; in need of this information because of federal government policies. The return on investment in political science funding is extremely high, often resulting in Nobel Prizes and findings utilized by both the GAO and CRS. Finally, while Senator Coburn criticizes the decision to award new grants to research on topics that have been previously investigated, it must be remembered that political science, more so than any of the so called "hard" sciences, is dealing with an ever changing medium. Government today is not the same as it was 20 years ago and neither are people's attitudes or ways of participating in it. The US government needs ongoing research so that our congressional representatives, like yourself, are not blind-sided by problems that we assumed were already researched and solved.REPORT COMMENTS

National Security and the Economy are not the only important interests of the United States Government, or it's people. The NSF, and specifically its program for political science serve crucial ends. As our society changes with frightening swiftness, someone needs to explore how this impacts political behavior, the government, and the society as a whole.REPORT COMMENTS
