Unfair to those that were in a wrong place, wrong time situation at a very young age ,with time served 30 years ago and can't find certain work or have a small handgun for personal protection. Something needs to be done about this in north Carolina.

A small petty charge is a life sentence in Virginia.... You will not be able to attended school for certain things, and definitely struggle to find a job... So how the hell do they expect for someone to change, or better themselves if you cant even attended school to get a good job???? How can one better themselves if no one is willing to give them a chance????

Because of something I didnt even do, I cannot get an expungement in va for a misdemeanor petty theft. Now I cant find work anywhere and have sent my children to family on the west coast. I cant even go visit them, pay my insurance, and am living in my van. This isnt fair. Please consider this bill.If our President can pardon murderers and rapists, why cant we have our records expunged? These are simple mistakes from our pasts, we deserve to be able to live and work just like anyone else. Thank you for your time.

My name a Shawn Proctor I was convicted of a non-violent felony in 2004 when I was 18 years old. Due to my income situation at the time I was poorly represented thus ruining my life. I wish to speak to you about the potential to help non-violent felons who have had no other record other than a first-time offense that caused the felony to be able to resolve or expunge that non violent felony. I believe with your leadership you can make a change in Virginia and help those who are most in need. I am a single parent have a 5 year old daughter I spend my life taking care of her but due to my record I am unable to volunteer and obtain any type of contact with her while she is at school I am also permanently disabled due to an accident in 2007 making it nearly impossible to find a job. The only jobs that I could obtain prior to my accident or manual labor hard physical work and construction. I am unable to do any type of manual labor do to my severely broken legs and multiple surgeries. Governor McAuliffe feels the same way everyone deserves a chance that is all I am seeking. I'm 30 years old now after 12 years I am still trying to piece together my life after the mistake that I made as are many other people that have non-violent felonies that are unable to obtain any type of real work or access to any type of real life activities. I have had my rights restored I am looking forward to voting but I would like to see there be a change for people that have changed their lives for the better instead of living with something that was a mistake from when they were young and naive. I pray that you read this letter and that you find mercy upon me for the sake of my life and my daughter's life thank you so much.

This is preposterous and it should be handled immediately! I've been honorably discharged from the United States Navy and I'm graduating from an accredited university here in Virginia in December of 2016 all after this conviction, and I can't even get a job with Sam's club! This is happening only because MY registered gun was locked in MY glove compartment while I had been pulled over for tented Windows.

I agree I am currently in the same situation and I know what you are going through. I feel that if the ex-offender has proven him/herself to be a model citizen what is the problem with expunging the offense. My offense was over 12 years ago and it is my only offense and I am still treated if it happened yesterday. People make mistakes and people change. Why should they have to suffer for the rest of their lives for a mistake over 5 years ago?

All charges should not be handled in the same manner and different consideration givenot based on circumstances. There are many individuals who made simple mistakes in their younger years and those mistakes continue to haunt them years later and make it almost impossible for them to be successful members of society. We don't want people filling up our prisons but the laws and background checks make it impossible for individuals with a prior charge to find a decent job or housing.

It is not fair that those convicted of a crime and paid thier dues can not get a good paying job because of it. I lost a 32$ job because I have a criminal background that I paid my time for, non violent and stupid things I did in my 20s almost 20 years ago. I'm not that person any longer and all I would like is to move on with my life and work and provide for my family.
