It is a disease like any other and it's time to eliminate the stigma that comes with mental illness.

My friends 2 sons, 2 years and the other 6 months were murdered by there grandmother, then she took her own life. She suffered from mental illness. She had taken herself off of her medication. We need to address the issue of mental illness before anyone else losses a loved one.

My friend committed suicide last year as a result of mental illness. It's time we address this issue and find a solution to this growing problem that affects the lives of American people. I support this petition.

I think it's about time that Mental Illness is treated just like any other illness such as Asthma. We don't discriminate against people with COPD, but if you have a "mental illness" not matter how mild or severe you are automatically stigmatized.

I am an RN who has read some of the previous comments which hit spot on to my own family coping with mental illness. My mother and fraternal twin sister had bipolar II. My oldest son has been diagnosed with bipolar I. I have a teenager still at home that I pray, desperately does not have the same diagnosis. I pray every night for all three of my sons to be healthy both physically and mentally. I have said this one pray all my life. I grew up as a small child watching my mother either being taken to or picked up by the state hospital. I have my own scars from growing up b/c of this public stigma that says they have very few rights which makes me mad as hell. These individuals are usually the brightest people I know. Washington, D.C., needs to get off their asses and implement more targeted help for patients like my families and yours around the USA A petition is a beginning but not the solution. I am someone's child, mother, friend, and sister who hurts deeply because people who don't understand mental illness just ignore us, sadly. ;-(. Kim, RN

I have 3 teenage sons who are diagnosed, bi-polar, adhd, and have severe anxiety. Because their disabilities do not show physically it is difficult to make people understand these "disabilities ?and how they affect their lives. I think educating the public is essential to their wellbeing and to their view on society as a whole. They at times, feel ashamed of their mental illness because of the way it is portrayed to the world (especially on the news). I do my very best, as a single mom, to reassure them that they are bright, intelligent individuals and am very capable of being whoever they choose to be despite the obstacles they may encounter along the way.

My boyfriend desperately needs to be back on his meds, but in a year+we've been unable to find him help...most of our area's free/sliding scale mental health clinics have closed. I HAVE insurance and still have been unable to get in to see a psychiatrist to get back on meds, and I've been trying for around 9 months. This is a shameful state of affairs.

I am the Program Director/RN for an outpaient clinic that provides group therapy to individuals who suffer from mental illness. I am extremely upset with the way insurance companys and pharmacutical companys are dictating who gets help and for how long. There are people coming asking for help, homicidal people wanting help, and are unable to be treated due to the type of insurance they have. Or, they have to wait 2 weeks to 4 months to see a psychiatrist because they are over booked with appointments, then they run out of their medication and are unable to get apporpriate prescriptions filled because they can't get in to see anybody. We as a society really need to press for better and more health care facilities and mental health professionals. And our government shoulf step in and provide better direction to insurance companies and pharmacuetical companies. This is frustrating to those who suffer from mental illness, and we wonder why they have psychotic breaks.

to continue to develop and increase mental health awareness even further. Mental illness is in mine and quite a lot of families...to quote someone who said it best..."major thing is to De-stigmatize mental illness. If this can help just a small bit in De-stigmatizing it," ...then I will be glad to help in any way I can.
